How many people know that many of the Confederates went to Brazil after the last Civil War? A Brief History of the Confederate Colonies of Brazil The Confederados http://www.patsabin.com/lowcountry/confederados.htm At the end of the Civil War in the 1860's, a migration of Confederates to Brazil began, with the total number of immigrants estimated in the thousands. They settled primarily in the southern Atlantic coastal region of the country, in Americana, Campinnas, Sao Paulo, Juquia, New Texas, Xiririca, Rio de Janeiro, and Rio Doce. One colony settled in Santarem, in the north on the Amazon River. The cost of passage was $20-$30, and the voyage took several weeks. Each family was encouraged to bring a tent, light weight furniture, farming supplies and seeds, and provisions to last six months. Land was offered at 22 cents an acre, with four years credit, and rich farmland was promised. After landing on the coast, travel by land and river was difficult. Women who had never cooked a meal or washed a garment were cooking and washing over an open campfire. Malaria was prevalent, and a drought ruined most of the first crops in the colony of Rio Doce. Although many Confederates ultimately returned to their homes in the United States, many more settled permanently in Brazil and their descendants are living in Brazil...many still celebrating their Southern American heritage as well as their Brazilian culture. Read more about the Brazilian descendants of the Confederados at the The Sons of Confederate Veteran's web page for the "Os Confederados" If the Liberals have their way then my kids can never ever survive. The Liberals wanna take food from my table and feed the welfare and illegal aliens horde. Its not gonna happen without a fight. That is for sure. That really is interesting, I didn't know that. More than that my daughter-in-law is from Brazil.

Do you think my holey pants can be returned? I got a pair of fairly expensive jeans ($80) in september and since then I have gently worn them about once a week. I was looking at them tonight and realized that they have developed several small worn-in spots and little tears. The jeans are made to look a mildly distressed (not very much), and the little areas of the pants that were intentionally made to look like you put a sander on the denim or something have become holes. I paid good money for them and I am not fully satisfied. Do you think they will take them back? I have the reciept but not the tags. I got them from Coastal Farm Supply and they are Cruel Girl Jeans. No sorry, you bought them about three months ago and have worn them roughly 10-12 times. The problem with the distressed jeans that many people don't realize is that they distress even more after you start wearing and washing them. Most stores have a 30-90 day return policy and that is for never worn or damaged (damaged but never worn) clothing.

Why the prices for mussels in North America??? In eastern Canada and the northeastern coastal USA states, 35 years ago one would find at fish markets mussels, almost all wild, at 50c a pound, 3lbs for $ 1.00 on sale. Since then the cultivated (farmed) mussel industry has developed (in that part of the world)
like crazy, especially in Maine and Prince Edward Island, whose mussel farms now supply most of North America. So why was it that, with impressive growth of the industry with managed aquicultural production and growing economies of scale, and corresponding increase in supply, prices have increased so much? First the mussel farms introduced a standard 2lb (907grams) bag, priced at $1.00. Then it became $ 1.49 about 20 years ago. Just 5 years ago the standard price was still $ 1.99 (either in US or CDN dollars - for some reason currency differential - which became almost 40% - never seemed to be reflected in dollar prices on the different sides of the border). Then all of a sudden about 3 years ago it jumped to $ 2.99.
Then, in the past year the price jumped to $ 3.99 and just recently to $ 4.49! This holiday weekend, stopping at supermarkets during our family's annual foliage-viewing trip saw 2lb/907g bags of mussels being promoted at one Quebec chain and one New England chain at
$ 3.99, all other chains had them priced at
$ 4.49 - again with no dollar differentials in
US versus Canadian stores' prices notwithstanding the 14% US to CDN currency conversion. Why is this? Why should not the successful growth of the aquicultured mussels industry stabilized and even lowered the price, as happened with aquicultured Atlantic salmon? (The price increase for farmed mussels having
greatly outpaced that for wild lobsters even!). I have heard or read nothing about any disease or weather problems harming the Maritimes' and Maine mussel industry. Is there some sort of mussel cartel or conspiracy or other sort of economic control going on here?
(If you are European please let me know if a similar price escalation is happening there, thank you).
(If you are logged into Yahoo Answers from a European country, where mussel farming is centuries old, can you inform if there been any similar price increases for these delicious mollosks to what has been occurring for those farmed in North America's Maine and Prince Edward Island?)
sitting here(P.E.I) watching out my front window mussels coming out of the water. funny isn't it even funner is that your gov. took local growers to court(and lost) over dumping mussels, selling them for less than can be produced in Maine.
as for the cost, i can only guess the increase in cost of fuel,(boats, forklifts, trucks, etc.) wages, and insurance. locally the growers are facing a invasion of tourniquets(not sure of spelling), a small worm like organism that attaches it self on the shell(well EVERYTHING that is in the water) it just covers everything, a 2" mussel might be a 6" ball. it doesn't do any harm to the mussel, just competition for food, and causes lots of grief, and more work for the growers.
all of this, as well as supply and demand would reflect the price
they sure are good though.

They are a people rich in myth, knowledge and spirituality. The Aymara were the members of a great but little known culture of the Americas centered in the ancient city of Tiahuanaco. Between 400 AD. and 1000 AD. Tiahuanaco was the capital of an empire that spanned great parts of the south central Andes Mountains. The pre contact, indigenous central Andean cultural pattern contrasts sharply with that of the other areas of South America. For maximum development the Andean economy required rich soil, an adequate water supply, and the absence of both forest and deep rooted grasses that were difficult to eradicate. For maximum development of their land, the Aymara grew crops that were suitable to the Andean climate. The alpaca and the llama were also suited to the Andean climate, and could be found on most of the Aymara land areas. These general characteristics were found in the coastal valleys and large highland basins of the central Andes. Each major highland basin and each coastal valley might be considered a distinct cultural unit. Each of the these regional states and chiefdoms were geographically isolated by distance and by mountains. They were characterized by local cultural and stylistic weaving and ceramic traditions, that were well documented in the archeological record of the central Andes. Caring for Nature: Andean Condor The South American Condor: In many parts of its native range the Andean Condor is extremely rare, or has already become extinct. Protection is essential for this great bird, however protective legislation in South America is worth very little and there is no reason to expect it would have any impact at all. Geographical Range: South America from Venezuela, where it was rediscovered in 1977, to Columbia are near extinction. More are seen at Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina but are highly endangered. Habitat: Coastal cliffs, or the highest and least accessible parts of mountains. Commonly found at altitudes of up to 7000 metres. Physical Characteristics: Vies with the California Condor for the title of largest bird of prey. They reach a length of 101 116 centimetres and a male may weigh as much as 12 kgs, having a wingspan of three metres wide. Very long lived with one in captivity attaining the age of approximately 77 years old. This bird lived outdoors at Moscow Zoo from 1892 to 1964 and was probably already at least five or six years old at the time it was caught. Adults are dark grey, almost black, with the exception of white markings across the wings. The bare skin on the head and neck is pinkish, the colouration being caused by haemoglobin, the iron rich compound found in blood cells. Directly below the neck is a collar of white feathers which is narrower in the female. The male has a caruncle, fleshy crest, on the top of head and lobe shaped wattles appear on the
Shrimp Farm, Thailand by Asiatravel.com For Bookings: www.asiatravel.com For More Video: book.asiatravel.com A shrimp farm is an aquaculture business for the cultivation of marine shrimp or prawnsa for human consumption. Commercial shrimp farming began in the 1970s, and production grew steeply, particularly to match the market demands of the US, Japan and Western Europe. The total global production of farmed shrimp reached more than 1.6 million tonnes in 2003, representing a value of nearly 9000 million US dollars. About 75 of farmed shrimp is produced in Asia, in particular in China and Thailand. The other 25 is produced mainly in Latin America, where Brazil is the largest producer. The largest exporting nation is Thailand. Shrimp farming has changed from traditional, small scale businesses in Southeast Asia into a global industry. Technological advances have led to growing shrimp at ever higher densities, and broodstock is shipped worldwide. Virtually all farmed shrimp are penaeids (ie, shrimp of the family Penaeidae), and just two species of shrimp the Penaeus vannamei (Pacific white shrimp) and the Penaeus monodon (giant tiger prawn) account for roughly 80 of all farmed shrimp. These industrial monocultures are very susceptible to diseases, which have caused several regional wipe outs of farm shrimp populations. Increasing ecological problems, repeated disease outbreaks, and pressure and criticism from both NGOs and consumer countries led to changes in the industry in the late 1990s and generally
