Gift Idea? Hurricane Baskets? ok people- gimme some ideas...My family is largely located on the Gulf Coast, and seems to keep getting hit by hurricanes, power outages, tornados, etc. What would you use as a "basket" and what would you put in it? I was thinking a clothes basket with things like a small radio, batteries, pop-top cans of food, juice, flashlights, bottles of water, granola bars, cheese/ crackers, etc... All you yankees- think days without power in a snowstorm, except hot and wet outside! :) Gimme some other ideas! ok- I think they are pretty familiar with all the necessary stuff- They have had plenty of news reports to tell them that. I am talking about "creature comforts". Thanks! haha- u Silly- How do you expect ice to stay frozen and eggs to stay cold?--for months until a hurricane hits??????? besides everyone´s suggestions put some stuffed animals, maybe they have kids and a little Teddy bear will help a little.. those packets for making instant hot chocolate and some dehydrated marshmallows... cookies.. hard candies and an encouraging note from you....

Is there anything else we should do to prepare for hurricane irene? Hi! Okayyy so lately my family and I have been watching several news/weather channels to get information on the hurricane that will be hitting our area around Sunday. One station has said that by the time it will hit us it will have weaken into a tropical storm. Other stations haven't said anything on the category or strength of the storm during the time it will hit us. Anyway, I helped my dad bring in the patio furniture to the shed and secure all the other items around the outside of the house. We found flashlights and batteries lying around the house and a radio just in case of a power outage. My mom went shopping and brought home several gallon jugs of water and canned foods and other snacks that won't go bad if the power goes out. I know that evn though it might be a tropical storm, it is no joke and must be taken very seriously but on some news stations they are advising you to prepare in case of an evacuation and pack a first aid kit and extra clothes. I mean I would do that if we seriously had to evacute but I don't think that will be totally necessary because I have been in a tropical storm b4 in Florida. I mean we should be okay I mean my dad mite even put boards up to cover the windows lol. I am not worried about having to evacute we don't live really that close to the coast. But there are shelters around town if we ever needed to leave home so that is in mind. So if anyone can think of anything else we should do help prepare that would seriously help and what are you doing to prepare for Irene? Will the world end due to a super volcano at Yellowstone park? My friend was telling me that Yellowstone park will erupt shortly and it could be in 2012. He told the volcano is actually a few thousand years late in erupting so its definitely coming soon. His exact words were "Its going to happen, the question is when". I heard that the only way humanity can survive such an eruption is going underground. He said even if the lava doesn't kill us, the toxic gas released in the air will surely get any survivors and that there will be so much released that it will block the sun for 3 years. That means we would be underground for at least 5 years. No sun, food shortages, no animals, technology ( except petty things like flashlights which will last till about the batteries die.) so we would also die that way. When he told me this I really got freaked... I live on the east coast and he said the volcanic eruption will hit the coast within 3 to 4 hours! what? that's fair! I asked if we just moved somewhere else like Russia and he said no, it would get there too. Great. He also said super volcano's have a cycle, they happen every 65 million years. If any of you have [short] scientific data to disprove this theory or if you want to tell me what you will be doing when the eruption occurs then please comment below... huh and please say something reassuring. I really want to here what you guys will do though... in the time that any world-ending event occurs? Well, let's see...
The Yellowstone super-volcano has erupted 3 times in the last 2.1 million years - did the world end then? We are still here, so apparently not. Oh, you mean will life go extinct? Well, there is no evidence of a mass extinction event at any of the 3 prior super-eruptions, so probably not.

1) There is nothing special what-so-ever about the year 2012. The idea that there will somehow be a global catastrophe in that year is a hoax. http://www.2012hoax.org/ The chances of a super-eruption or any other kind of global catastrophe happening in 2012 is almost exactly the same as the chances of it happening in 2016 or 2020 or 2031 - nearly zero.

3) There is no scientific evidence of any kind that should make anyone worry about a global-scale catastrophe. Stop worrying and tell your fear-mongering, ignorant friend to do some research and learn the facts before spreading misinformation and lies about sch things.

How much will all my equipment weight? 1.Hiking Backpack, (enough 2 carry 30 pounds or more) 2.Bivouac 3.hiking water filter (plastic) 4.16 packs of dried astronaut food 5. Sleeping Bag 6. Flashlight 7.4 packs of. 4 pack batteries it needs 2 be weighed in Grams or Kilograms and it can weight more than 30 pounds. :) and please tell me other things i can take on my hiking adventure 2 the West Coast Trail im sorry it is probably is a wierd question, but this is for school. and we have 2 weight it in kilo's or grams What an odd question. Why not spet on a scale and weigh it yourself???
And why only in Grams or Kilos? It doesn't change the weight if in pounds and oz.
Then you say it can weight more than 30 POUNDS- if your asking for a weight in kilos etc why do you converse in pounds?

EDIT: I see... Since much of what you carry can vary in weight dramatically accuracy is unlikely. But from my hiking experience what you listed would be about 20 to 25 lbs.

What Natural Disasters can occur where you live, how are you prepared? We're in Southern CA, By the coast south of Los Angeles (city.) So, we're susceptible to earthquakes only. We haven't had a large one in about 15 years (knock on wood) but we're kinda prepared. We've got food and water for 2 weeks, flashlights and batteries, A bag with clothes and toiletries, comfort items, camping gear if we need to evacuate, etc. Where you live? What's your disaster type? And what do you need "just in case"? How often do you ever experience the wrath of mother nature? Which state has the least amount of natural disasters? Anyone disaster free? Kitkat-Absolutely, anything that can keep you trapped at home or without utilities, etc. Jennifer- so far, Arizona sounds good!! Thanks Amber!!! I was doing just fine before those additions of yours! Well, I live in Southern Arizona. About the only natural disaster we get is simply being hotter than hell. No hurricanes, no tornados, no earthquakes, no blizzards. Occasionally, we get heavy rains with some flooding, but it only closes a road for a few hours. Nothing serious.
I do keep bottles of water in the car, stored so that they are protected from the sun. In the car, I also have a battery-powered air pump, for flats, sunscreen and a shade umbrella, just in case. And I never leave the house without my cellphone.
