What's a good flashlight to keep in the car? I'm looking for a bright flashlight that I can keep in my car should I ever have something come up like something with the car so I can see underneath and look under the hood and see if anything is wrong. It could potentially be used at some distance as well but the use of the light would be based solely on how well it does it (So if it works great only at doing what I originally said that's fine, but something that will work long distances too would be nice). I've seen those little rechargable ones you shake - they're not very bright. I don't care if it's LED or a traditional bulb, but I know the LEDs are better on battery life and I would like whatever flashlight I get to have the best battery life considering it will sit in the car for a long time and be exposed to hot and cold temperatures (Inside a center console compartment). I currently have a 2 D cell Maglite and I'm very pleased with the brightness but it's far too large to store in the center console and even if I could fit it I imagine the batteries would die too quickly. A key point also, the cheaper the better. I know Surefire makes a very nice Defender LED light that's rated at 120 lumens but it's $150. The ideal price range would be $20 or less but I could possibly go a little more. I had considered one of those mini-Maglites with the 3 Watt Luxeon LED that take 3 AA batteries (Which is $20) but I would like to know if there are any other options that are good or better than that since most of what I know about flashlights is about Maglites. Your best bet is a headlamp, no need to hold the flashlight in your hands. They`re just as bright as maglites, they`re waterproof, and can even be less expensive. They`re great for working on cars because you dont need to balance a flashlight on your engine or under your car, where you look is where the light will shine and both hands are free to do anywork needed on your car. They`re also small enough to keep in the center console or glove box and are just as bright as the large maglites.

A good heavy duty torch? I need a good, reliable, heavy duty torch that is bright and lasts for a fair while. Something like a D Cell Maglite is what I'm after. Any suggestions? I really like the look and feel of Maglites but are they very bright? I've heard that LED torches are dim at best. I want it for walking through the village at night so it needs to be bright enough to light my path for say 10-15 yards. If Maglites are the answer, then which model is best? Or maybe there's a cheaper alternative to a Maglite? From Maglite.co.uk they're an astronomical £30 which is about US$60!!! I've seen them for MUCH less on US websites but I don't want to have to order a TORCH from overseas. Thanks much! LED torches have improved greatly in recent years. Maglite make one with LEDs.
I'd recommend an LED "headlight", which you strap on your head (similar to a miners lamp). I've got one with 6 LEDs on, some have more. They are fairly cheap if you shop around. Lots available from Amazon, link below.

Where is the best place to buy a Maglite? Ive been wanting to get a 4 D cell LED Maglite and I'm wondering if anyone knows a really cheap website or store that it can be found at. Where can I get a red lens for my mini Maglite? I'm trying to get a few things together for a basic astronomy setup, and I need a red light that doesn't ruin my night vision. I've found a lot of red lenses for mini Maglites on the internet, and they're really cheap ($0.75), but I don't want to pay $5 in shipping for a 1-inch circle of plastic. Is there a major hardware or electronics chain that would sell them? I would try a local theater supply store - the stage lights that they use have replaceable colored plastic (I believe these are called "gels" in the industry). You should be able to buy a red one for next to nothing and cut hundreds of those little red lenses out of it. Or keep the rest in case you ever break a tail light!

Help with battery/battery charger please!? So i made a housing for a laser pointer i'm making out of a mini Maglite, that has 2 cells available for AA batteries. the diode that i have runs on 6 volts (4 standard AA's). -The batteries i was thinking about getting are **Varta CR AA 3V/2000mAh Lithium "AA" Batteries** -I guess my question would be this, do you know of any other 3 volt AA batteries that are cheaper that these and/or do you know of any chargers that can accommodate and charge a 3 volt properly? Most all cell pho batteries are 3.5v lithium cells and can be charged with most any 4.5v charger. They may be a size problem for your case. The same idea would work to charge the ones you spec. You could cut off the plug from the charger or fashion a jack to use the plug.

Is it okay to smoke out of a Mag-Lite (anodized)? http://www.maglite.com/product.asp?psc=1AAACELL&pt=R It says its anodized material. I was wondering because unlike the cheap flashlights, the inside of this one is black, some material they painted it in or maybe the metal is just like that... Im worried that it could give off bad fumes. You will end up smoking the anodized paint. And over time aluminum breaks down too. It's recommended not to use aluminum pipes.

Right - I need a torch recommendation!? Okay, well the main reason why I want a torch is to, of course, be able to see in the dark. Duh. But, I want to be able to see a good distance away because I can imagine I will be filming in the dark with my camcorder, and I highly doubt my little cheap-n-cheerful torch bought from Poundland will be good enough. I'm not sure quite what I'm asking, so I'm asking for your help on here folks. I want something that has a fairly wide range but also doesn't have such a short distance I can't see my feet! It has to be fairly powerful, bright, and not prone to dimming or flat after 10 minutes. I did consider rechargable / windup types - But not quite sure what the pros and cons are. Someone also suggested a MagLite, can't vouch for them as I have never used them. But how about 1m candle power torches? Or 2m? Only thing I have going is windup torches, that way they don't need to be recharged by mains power, fairly compact and small, and can be used pretty much anywhere, but I'm open to opinions. Thanks. Two D cell maglite with LED lamp, easily goes 500 feet and has adjustable beam. Batteries last a real long time with a LED lamp. Not too large to carry around.
