Hey i just went to a 2 dollar shop an was looking for a cheap flashlight? I saw one of those 14 led style flashlights and was wondering if they were bright or not and whether 2 dollar shop flashlights are good deals.
Yes, they work. "Bright" is a relative term - they are brighter than a candle, but not as bright as a krypton-filled incandescent bulb.
Are they a good deal? I would take along whatever batteries the thing takes, and try it out. If it works, it's a good deal.

About how many lumens are the cheap 9 LED mini flashlights? I bought this performance tool 9 led flashlight for like 2 bucks at advance auto. I honestly do not remember very well any more, but this was brought up on CPF. I would say about 35 lumens +5 or -5 lumens. I am not positive since I never use them. I mainly use higher end lights.
Keep in mind that if you buy a flashlight that is LED, and it says it can put out 100 lumens, it will likely not put out 100 lumens. Many China made lights will say 100 lumens, but that is technically incorrect, since that is what the LED is capable of putting out, not what is truly coming out the front. Therefore it could be far less than 100 lumens. Typically if you buy an American made light from companies like Surefire, Muyshondt, Inova, etc. they will have the actual output listed. However, they are not cheap, and I paid a very high cost for my Muyshondt Aeon, which can put out 115 lumens on high, 10 lumens on low, and has amazing battery life for a CR2 battery. It is not the brightest, but it is definitely a very high quality light.
I am not saying that all China made lights are this way, but many of them are. This can go for many lights made in the USA as well as other countries.
Could a cheap blacklight LED damage my eye? I purchased a cheap keychain UV LED flashlight and have been playing around with it for a few days. I started to wonder whether or not it was safe, and then i noticed my vision seemed worse. Do you think its a mere coincidence that my eyes seem a bit out of focus, and that maybe because I was thinking about it I then realized my eyesight was worse, or do you think the LED could be damaging my eye? I don't look directly at the LED bulb, but I just shine it on things.

Well the little LED light doesn't specify if it is an actual blacklight. Based on how you are describing it and the picture shows a Violet colored light coming from it... it sounds like it is.
Well blacklights emit long wave UV or also called UVA.

Too much exposure to UVB is more harmful for your eyes than any of the UV rays.
As long as you are not shining the light in your eye for extended periods of time you should be fine. If you think about it UVA occurs in our sunlight and I'm sure you have been outside before without sunglasses on and nothing happened. In saying that you should really wear sunglasses if you plan on spending time out in the sun because the UVB rays can cause the early onset of cataracts and such growths as pingueculae or pterygia.
Anyways since you are not actually shining it in your eye and your not even really exposed to it because you are shining it on things then everything will be ok.
If you eyesight still continues to bother you then maybe you should see an eyedoctor for an eye exam....its possible you may need glasses or if you already have them then a new prescription.

Cheaper? The main thing I want them to have is to be tough, reliable, bright and waterproof. A lifetime warranty or better would be awesome as well as it seems that most if not all of surefire's flashlights come with one.

I also have a 3 watt Maglite AA. It puts out great light but, it's tempermental at times - batteries, contacts, some days it just doesn't like me. Other than that it's a good size, with a good reflector, and good light out put. My complaint is that you need two hands to turn it on and you can't get the accessory push button switch.
Pelican head lamps are very good too - unconditional lifetime warranty, very durable, go with the LED as the others can drain batteries quickly.

Your 3 batteries add up to 4.5 volts so you may risk damage to the leds, One method would to add a 5 volt regulator
