I had [have rather...as I still play most of them] some games with 2d like Melty Blood, Arcana Heart, Metal Slug, Street Fighter, Sonic and like what you have mentioned, Rumble Fish [which has nothing to do with fishes at all!]. For their graphics and appearance likewise, I'd look at it but only secondly to its plot or storyline. The plot is more important, and the playability! Let's say Metal Slug for example, despite its 2d-ness, people liked it for its game style and infinite ammo. It will be a classic, an epic. Times are moving fast, I'm not a fortune teller so I would not be able to tell whether the people in our society will forget about these things. Maybe yes, maybe no. I for one will not, I bet on it.
So yes, it's past millennium, it's 2008, and some people are greedy or are in need of money. I guess that is the reason why companies try to get in with the modern world and follow its pleas of new things and much more "pleasant" outcomes. Despite of how much people liked their 2d, they would still have to earn money and continue forth. Try asking some eleven year olds or somehow any much younger ones, they probably wouldn't know what or who Sonic is! [for an example only].
Either way, 2d may never be forgotten. It may have a comeback or clash in combination with 3d [like what you said] but it could also perish...and we may never see it again, but I doubt it.
We'll see it again. I'm hopeful of seeing much of it again in the future. ;D

Do shows like Boondocks, Death Note, and Ben 10 use 2d animation w/ 3d comp. graph., including 3d cell shading? I don't know if 2d animation software can do cell shading. If so, can it do as well of a job as 3d cell shading? Also, does anybody know what 2d software is used by major production companies that make Ben 10, etc.? Or at least good 2d software that looks professional and not cheesy, hand drawn, or too traditional such as the traditional look of Tom and Jerry or Disney animation? THANKS!!! Flash is generally NOT used by animation production studios, since it lacks the tool set needed. And most broadcast 2d animation is still hand drawn!

And remember, software is merely a tool - to create professional looking 2d animation, you will need to learn to draw well. Get a copy of "the Animator's Survival Kit" by Richard Williams.

These support automatic cell shading (up to a point).
Some 2d animation, such as South Park, is actually done in a 3d animation app by rigging flat surfaces and mapping the drawings to those surfaces. Maya is used for South Park, as far as I know.

any free 2D cell animation software? does anybody know of any free 2d cell animation software? it doesn't really HAVE to be cell animation, but i sure would appreciate it if it was...oh yeah, and one more thing, please don't suggest blender 3D, as i already have that program. I just need a program that is 100% free, not a trial, and could produce good quality 2d cell (or if not, just regular 2D) animation, with the ability to export to either windows media player format files, or quicktime player format files. What's a good software package for doing 2d cell animation? I'm not bothered about 3d I have Truespace for that and I love it. Adobe Flash seems to be VERY popular, is relatively easy to learn and not particularly expensive.

Should the old animation style be brought back in Transformers? If you have watched Cybertron and Energon, you should have noticed that there are ugly Cell shaded 3D characters. I am asking you this, should the old animation be brought back? Like in the G1 Cartoons? I know there is an upcoming Show, Transformers Heroes, that is said to have all new animation but I doubt it will be the old style animation. The old animation was the best. It didn't feel gimicky, so you really got to appreciate the story lines. Who am I kidding, all we wanted to see was Soundwave knock-out his cassettes. I mean Blaster and his ghetto talk was smooth, but a robot with a digitized voice who goes by the moto "Cries and screams are music to my ears."

should i turn on the toon shader when i do 3d animation or does it just look tacky? deeper into the question does cell shading look good or is it too sci-fi anime-ish? when doing 3d art If you and your audiences feel it tacky, then you shouldn't turn it on.
As for cell shading looking too Sci-Fi anime-ish or not.
Again, ask yourself and your audiences.
3D rendering looks good on mechanical things, so mechanical things are the prefered objects to be rendered as 3D models.
And cell shading on 3D models as mechanical things is much easier.

But personally depending on what I need I use the following, they are not free but are very good. Adobe AfterEffects 6.5, Macromedia Fireworks MX, and Swish (to make Flash)
