WiFi Radio Questions? This retired technically challenged lady is interested in purchasing a WiFi Radio. We use highspeed and router for our PC. I understand that wifi radio's can be used in any room in the house without the PC needing to be on. I've been researching the Tangent Quattro, The Sangean WFR-20 (seen on CCrane website) and the Roku Soundbridge system. I would appreciate hearing which are best along with pro's and cons. Also with PC turned off - does the radio's require batteries? Our local AM and FM radio stations bring in very limited stations. I am visually impaired and enjoy listening to talk shows. I am sure all radios will provide some sort of a power brick (included or optional). Make sure you connect it to power since Wifi consumes lots of power.

Do you know how to build a self powered generator like the one sold by C Crane Co. at the link below? http://www.ccrane.com/more-categories/alternative-power/freeplay-freecharge-weza-portable-energy-source.aspx Theoretically its a simple magneto. But to build one could be a long process. Lots and lots of windings to be able to get a decent current. I can see it being done, but not a job I would start. But that's just me.
And you would need a freewheel type ratchet for the pedal.

wi-fi reception Help me decide I can recieve signal outside but not from inside my house on my MacBook? Yes, Virginia, you can turn household food containers into highly effective directional Wi-Fi antennas that'll pick up wireless access points (WAPs) from ridiculous distances. In fact, building the antennas is a snap. Attaching those antennas to your Wi-Fi card, however, that's hard. How hard? On today's show, we'll show you.
It's also not legal by FCC rules. Legally, you may attach only an FCC-approved antenna to your card/base station. Homemade antennas are decidedly not approved. Some things to think about here before you chow down on the Pringles.
If the FCC comes knocking at your door, apologize and take the antenna down.
You may be creating problems for other folks and other wireless devices if you blast your wireless signal over the neighborhood.
You may be creating problems for community Wi-Fi efforts if you tick off the FCC enough to come out to your town.
It's highly unlikely, but the FCC could make an example of you. Can you say, "I need a lawyer, fast?"
Finally, the experts I've talked to say that many commercial antennas can kick the snot out of Pringles can antennas. (They definitely look cooler.)

I tried to get into consumer reports, which normally is the bible for rating products. I couldn't bring up any shortwave radios. However I conducted a comparative analysis myself by looking at the specs of both radios. I think the Grundig G5 is the better of the two because it has a feature called PLL Dual Conversion Am/SW circuitry. PLL (Phase-locked loop) is a control system that generates a signal that has a fixed relation to the phase of a "reference" signal. In simpler terms, a PLL compares frequencies of two signals and produces an error signal which is proportional to the difference between the input frequencies. I could go on and on, but basically the PLL generates stable frequencies, recovers a signal from a noisy communications channel, or distributes clock timing pulses in digital logic designs such as microprocessors. I looked at the specs of the Sangean ATS505P and there was no PLL capability. So, I think the Grundig wins out.

I always get no signals (the TV goes blank), sometimes, depending on the attena's position. Whenever I get a working position for my attena, the next time I turn it on, it has no signal. How do I get my attena to work better? oops, spelled antenna, sorry! Where do you live? that antenna you have sucks, sorry.

sorry but throw that antenna out it's junk, I tested
many like this and I found one of the best indoor
antenna's or in the top 5 is the phillips mant950
its perfect for UHF/VHF dtv and beat so many other
indoor antenna's. I highly recommend you google
this antenna and buy it and experiment with TVfool
to get the most free channels.
If you wanna go extreme outdoor antenna is always
better. You can find a installer so they can give you
a good outdoor antenna like CM4221HD 4 bays or
other kinds based on your TV fool and how much
channels you want, they will ground it for you, pre
amplify it and you will get best results hiring a
professional and letting him do the install to get
everything reliable and free. Although this will
cost a lot more, it's worth it for a one time payment
for free HD.
But try the phillips mant950 first, maybe that will be
all you need lol.

What portable radio gets the best AM reception? Gift idea? My dad listens to AM radio all the time. Can I connect an outside WiFi antenna to a netgear router and use it in the house? Router is Netgear 54Mbps WGR614, I'm looking at a CCrane Super USB External WiFi antenna. I can handle the cable adaptions, my concern is with the software. I have an XP Pro desktop and Vista laptop that I would like to use in my home. I have permission to use this network. I wouldn't use a USB outdoor antenna for this purpose at all. A good Wireless Bridge antenna with ethernet out would be much easier and no software is needed! There are POE (power over ethernet) radios with built in outdoor antennas that are made to do exactly what you want. Depending on how far away the source is you may can even use an indoor bridge with a small externally mounted Yagi. But USB creates way to many issues for this setup. (been there tried that - it isn't good) For one thing to really work correctly your router would need a USB input from the WAN side and yours doesn't!

What's the value of a resistor in an in-line volume control? One likely value would be 10,000 ohms, or 10 k ohms, but it could be other values. In any case, 10 k should work.
