how to get a little extra power out of my motorcycle? I have a 69 suzuki t125.
For the record, this is a 2 cylinder 125cc 2 stroke motor. (you don't have to pre-mix the oil. it does it for you.
it's rated at about 15hp, and tops out between 70-80 depending on wind direction and if i'm crouched over the gas tank, etc.... in a tail wind wearing tighter clothing and a full faced helmet, i actually got 85 one time on the freeway...
I'll preface my question with this......
If i wanted to go 220 mph down the freeway, obviously i'd buy a hayabusa.
That's not what i'm looking for. I would however like to add an extra 3- 5 horsepower if possible to potentially help me keep speed when climbing a hill with my girlfriend on the back.
I will say this. I have ridden a LOT of bikes, and this bike handles better than any bike i have ever ridden to date. This includes Ninjas, CBR's, etc. it may not have a high top speed, but i can take a hair pin with no problems...
sorry.. back on topic..
Parts are NOT easy to find for this bike. they stopped producing parts for it 20+ years ago. back in the day, they had lots of performance parts for them, but finding one that specifically fits this bike is going to be nearly impossible... anything i do like exhaust or intake will have to be fabricated and made to fit by hand (which i can do to some extent).
SO... given that, what can i do to make it a little more powerful?
For the record also, it's a 6v system...
Thanks in advance for the legitimate and helpful answers.
hmm.. thanks.... yeah i wasn't sure if the 185 had the same style motor. i think the 250's are different. i'll have to check into that. i would be ok with upgrading it to a 185 if it mounts the same way.
-- the t185 has a different style motor that requires it to have a frame under the motor, but like you said, i may be able to make the barrels fit... i'll look into that.
first.. take of the pipes & clean them inside .. the cleaner the better.
do the same to the air filter.. Air in ..air out.. makes a difference.
you can remove the barrels & polish & match the intakes & exhaust.
have a look & see if you can find some expansion chambers for the bike ..
not sure how far you want to modify it??
you could also look at over boring the cylinders too..
(from memory I think Suzuki had a 185 twin 2 stroke as well.. so you may be able to find a motor or barrels from one of those & make them fit??)
Does an exhaust for 600cc works good on GS 500E model 1995? i have Suzuki gs 500E model 1995 and i want to install ARROW exhaust system of 600cc of gsx 600 or cbr 600 so i know i can install it but will i lose power or compression if i installed it? will it work fine? does it improve performance or what? others told me it will work even better than 500cc exhaust can u help me please!
my bike is 4 stroke twin heads and has K&N open filter besides NGK iridium spark plugs
for more information the parts of exhaust i want to install is the Mid-Pipe and Muffler (end can)
thank you i appreciate your answers!
It will not fit unless you do some major work on the manifolds. This is because a GSXR600 and a CBR600 are 4-cylinder bikes and yours is a parrallel twin engine. This means that if you install the exhaust system off one of those two bikes, you'll have two extra manifolds that wont fit anywhere.
I'm also sure that the exhaust bore size is bigger on a GSXR600/CBR600 because the engine is in a higher state of tune than a GS500's. However, you state that just the mid-pipe and end can are the bits you want to install on your machine. Well, the can will hang in the wrong place so I would imagine it'd look stupid on a GS500 and it'll take a lot of work to get it to fit. Moral of the story? Buy performance parts MADE specifically for your bike ;)
Look for an exhaust meant to fit your bike. It'll save you a lot of time, work, money and eventually disappointment. Motad do a good stainless steel replacement exhaust (NEXXUS) for your model of bike: http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Suzuki/GS_500_ER_ES/94-95/picture/Motad_Complete_Nexxus_System/ But shop round for the best price - try eBay :) They do sound better than standard as well ;)
I'd also recommend that you stop spending money on 'performance' parts for your GS. You'd be better off spending that money on saving for/buying a bigger + faster bike to start with!
Good luck, whatever you decide to do and ride safe

Honda CBR f2/3 or Katana 600? I will need to trade my moded yz 125 in for either a Honda CBR f2 or f3 or a Katana 600 from the 1990's so I can get to school and as my main means of transportation. I don't want a 250 because I feel I have enough power to feel I can be safe. How do the two compare in gas mileage, finding parts, and all around performance? I own a late 94 Honda cbr600f2, I have drove alot of friends bikes and not one have I enjoyed riding like the f2. Gas mileage is great 55 mpg if you are conservative. Parts are fairly cheap from Honda, aftermarket parts are endless. Performance is great I have 28 thousand on mine with no rebuilds what so ever and she goes like it's brand new 0-60 in 3 seconds flat and 0-100 in 5.2 seconds
2002 Yamaha FZ1 or 2002 Kawasaki ZZR1200? Heres the scoop. I'm buying a new (new to me) bike this weekend. This will be my 3rd bike having owned a ZZX600, CBR 600rr, and a GXR750. I cant decide which bike to pick and would really like your help.
The first bike is a fully loaded 2002 Yamaha FZ1 with 20,000 miles. Now, when I say "fully loaded", it really is loaded. Every aftermarket part (both performance and cosmetic) you could ever want is on this bike. It truly is a eye catcher and runs like there is no tomorrow.
The second bike is a 2002 Kawasaki ZZR1200 with 9,000 miles. The bike is bone stock. Kept in a garage by an old man who takes it for a short ride around town every weekend. The bike is flawless. Not a single thing wrong with it.
What I'm looking for is a sport touring bike. Something to take me 20 miles to and from work everyday and run up to the mountains (with my wife holding on) on the weekends. I like the weight of the FZ1 (450 pounds). The ZZR is a monster (at 610 pounds). I have a feeling that the ZZR would make the better touring bike but it will take me $500 bucks to get it there (100 for risers and 400 for a Corbin). The FZ1 is already fully set up for anything, distance or sprint.
Please provide your feedback. This choice is driving me crazy. Any feedback would be great but I'm really after the "more experienced" advise.
One more thing, the FZ1 comes with riding gear (helmet, jacket, and gloves). I sold my gear with my last bike and will need the gear. The ZZR comes with nothing.
Hey there easygoing. You should live up to your screen name and chill out. I'm not asking for you to pick which bike I buy! I was asking what you would do if you were in my shoes.
Good luck in life. Hope you find another avenue to vent towards. Internet tough guys crack me up.
bike with gear.. jacket & gloves are OK..throw the helmet in the bin. for 1 thing you don't know if its damaged,, & it probably doesn't fit right as well...
& by the tone of the question you've already decided on the FZ1.. so not sure why the post...
If I talk you around to the ZZR.. that gives you someone to blame when its not what you expected??

But I've been into computers all my life (since Apple II days) and worked for a decade after college in the IT field before I became disabled. Now I build PCs at home and like to try to stay up to date with ever-changing technology. Obviously, I don't have an unlimited budget and it's mostly a hobby, but it's one of the things I most enjoy doing.
Ok, my question here. Lately I feel I've outgrown internal HDs, and that having multiple external HDs (even 1 or 2 TB models) is a bit cumbersome. I store a LOT of music, movies, television programs (mostly documentaries), and the like, in addition to my personal files like documents, programs, email, and so on. But the main space-consumer is video (Blu-ray quality or at least H.264, generally), and then audio (either Lossless or 320-bit CBR). Big libraries of video and audio chew through even large hard drives rather quickly.
Since "personal" class hard drives top out at 2TBs currently, I've just been adding more units... but at some point it becomes unwieldy and you run the risk of data loss with such a scheme, not to mention power management and performance. So lately I've been trying to learn about external boxes which house multiple drives, offer RAID 5 (say) redundancy+performance, give me the option to upgrade/expand as I go forward, and have their own power management and onboard processors to offload data management functions from my main machine, which I still use for games, the web, and productivity apps (mostly creative).
I've searched on terms like DAS, NAS, SAN, and so on, and I think I understand the basic players out there, in theory at least. What I don't fully understand is what technologies/solutions are most appropriate to which price scale, and how easy or difficult they are to build and/or manage. Is it something I can keep at my home and is relatively easy to build partitions, configure RAID, replace faulty drives or PSUs? Or will it be offsite somewhere managed by a company and costing thousands of dollars?
The former is more what I'm after. I have about 10TB worth of external storage right now, but as mentioned before it's a hodgepodge and not connected in any smart way. Backing up anything is up to me at the user level - not automated, no redundancy built in. I imagine a box of some sort which I can fill with off the shelf SATA drives from WD or Seagate, and that will power a single array which is both capacious and redundant enough to withstand drive failure. Bad drive is replaced, life goes on. Or, if I need to upgrade capacity, more OR bigger drives get inserted and the array can accommodate that dynamically.
I know I won't have uber performance without some fiber setup or ultimate date protection without off-site hardware and fireproofing and so on, but I just can't afford those types of "enterprise" setups. Like I said I'm a single dude just trying to manage a huge multimedia library - it's my hobby and passion. I have a single powerful PC that I use and enough parts to make a few less-powerful ones, I use Windows 7 but I'm not stupid about Linux or any *nix, though I'm a bit out of date as I've not worked out in the field for approximately 6 years - a lifetime in computing, I know.
To sum up, I need to know where to start to educate myself and migrate into more robust and roomy data storage systems than what a typical PC user needs, yet I can't afford the cost or manage the complexity of a full corporate, rack-mounted system like those I used to tend to back in the days from an IBM RS6000 running AIX and with full corporate support should I need it.
I need to be able to do this myself, to take that next step and protect my data from loss, index it for fast access, and all the rest, on not much more than a PC-user's budget. I'd like to set things up as I said so that I can worry less about where everything is and whether it's safe or not, and just have a relatively sizable vault of all my favorite movies, documentaries, tv shows, movies, concerts, and what have you at my fingertips, to enjoy when I want. The less fuss the better, and the cheaper the better, but NOT at the cost of compromising my data needlessly.
Sorry for such a long post but I don't want an answer that is just a link or a wiki article about storage or something that doesn't help me. Some actual good guides on how to proceed or answers from people who've made the transition I want to make are what I'm after.
Thank you very much ahead of time!

Justin - this from my experience. I went with a NAS box made by Infrant (now owned by Netgear). At the time I made my decision, I researched the hardware that was available at the time and the ReadyNAS NV+ was superior to everything out there at the time. I believe the NV+ set the bar. It was simple, robust, had very low power consumption, and shipped with Gigabit ethernet. Beefy power supply and a durable cooling fan.
There are a good number of competitors out now, but I would make the same choice today. The ReadyNas is still made and without drives, I've seen new ones for as little as $300. Same unit I paid $800 for 3 years ago.
Over time, I filled up NAS box and started swapping in drives that were 30% bigger, one at a time. It is time consuming and I wish I would have opted for an even bigger drive. This box WILL work with different size and brand drives, though I opted to keep the drives the same size and brand. Their X-Raid is pretty nice technology; very scalable. I use it with Macs, PCs and one Linux box.
The one caveat is to make sure you pick the drives from their compatibility list:

Honda CBR 125 Tuning? Hey there, im looking to just tune my bike up with a few extra performance parts. My bike is totally standard atm and im looking for a way to just spice it up a little. I've heared that replacing the stock filter with a K&N performance one will make it sound better and run a bit better and also replacing the standard exhaust and buying one with removable baffles. Does anyone know if these changes will make it faster and sound better and are new exhausts worth the money and can anyone recommend a good quality complete exhaust system which has removable baffles. Could you recommend me a brand within reasonable price i.e £200-300. Also is there anything else i could change to make it any faster. Thanks Tom.
Bearing in mind I'm 17 and it's all I can ride for now. And I'm not talking engine tuning. Just performance parts. Please save the lectures and if you know please just tell me. Thanks.
CBR125 .. its a small bike
the factory made it go as fast as they could & still be reliable
you can make it breath a little better.. but it wont make any difference..
use the 300 to trade up to something bigger...
Triumph Daytona 675 vs Honda CBR 600RR? I am really excited about getting a bike this summer but I have a couple questions about these bikes: - Which would be better for my first bike? Why? - Which is better performance wise? - Which can I benefit the most from? (What I mean is getting good parts for it, mainly exhaust.) - Speaking of exhaust, I was looking at the Yoshimura's exhaust, but what is the difference between the Full System and the Slip On for the CBR 600? I also saw a video about the Stiletto Exhaust but where can you buy them? Neither of these will be any good for your first bike. They are not beginners bikes. See the link below.
