Cap & Gown: Dictionary Sacrifice EarringsCan't think of the perfect gift for your favorite grad? Nothing goes better with her cap and gown than a pair of Cap & Gown Dictionary Sacrifice Earrings!
I hand-build each component of my earrings---this particular pair started out as a roll of 19 gauge annealed steel wire and a beat-up 1967 edition of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. This one-off pair of Dictionary Sacrifice beads hang from hand-forged earwires, and each earring boasts a tiny, hand-formed ampersand dangle. The metal components are tumbled for shine and durability, and each bead is cut and rolled by yours truly. The beads are sealed with acrylic glaze, but are best kept dry.
The Cap & Gown earrings measure 2.75" from the top of the earwire to the base of the dangle.
They'll be shipped to you in an upcycled, eco-friendly, earth-loving, handmade, origami box. Which, when you think about it, makes your entire purchase a pretty low-impact affair---especially considering the heads you'll turn while wearing these lovelies.$27

What is a "paternity cap"? I found this in the book "Girl with a pearl earring" by Tracy Chevalier, but don't seem to find it in any dictionary. Does anybody know what a "paternity cap" is? I suppose it's some kind of cap but what background information there is about it??? The context is the following : “Papa, your cap!” cried Cornelia. The girls ran up to him and tried to snatch off the quilted paternity cap he wore, its ribbons dangling below his ears. So definitely it isn't the condom that women wear. Plus the setting of this novel is in the 17th century... Thank you to the first answerer anyway. It was worn by young fathers from the birth of a child until baptism.

Where can I buy chanterelle mushrooms in LA? From dictionary.com:
Chanterelle: a mushroom, Cantharellus cibarius, having a bright yellow-to-orange funnel-shaped cap.

But look back at how many didn't know what 'facetious' meant !!

What does the abreviation "Cap" stand for? In dictionaries adj. stands for adjective...n. stands for noun...adv. stands for adverb...so what does cap. stand for? Thanks for any help! It is probably an abbreviation for Capital Letters
Why do West Virginians call a wool cap a toboggan? Seriously...that's what they call it. When I told my college roommate that a "toboggan" is a runner-less sled she said that Webster (like the dictionary guy) was wrong. I could accept that they call soda --> pop and shopping carts --> buggies, but seriously...toboggan?! Someone explain this to me.
I've heard of knit caps being called toboggans. It's a colloquialism, presumably because people wear them when tobogganing. No other reason as far as I can figure out.
But ..... shopping carts called buggies? I live in Texas, and never heard that one.
what is a musket cap? what is a dictionary definition of musket cap?
Musket Cap – A form of percussion cap that dates back to the Civil War era. It is characterized by large flanges and an overall greater size than the standard No. 11 percussion cap. It has a greater volume of spark as well as a higher burn rate, making it a favorite among hunters.
I hope that this helps! =)

Why do people keep saying Handicapped means Cap-in-hand? I cannot find any educated source that says this and yet it gets repeated over and over - here and other places. The origin of the word is a game of chance called hand i' cap. Does anyone have any credible resource that says otherwise?

1650s, from hand in cap, a game whereby two bettors would engage a neutral umpire to determine the odds in an unequal contest. The bettors would put their hands holding forfeit money into a hat or cap. The umpire would announce the odds and the bettors would withdraw their hands -- hands full meaning that they accepted the odds and the bet was on, hands empty meaning they did not accept the bet and were willing to forfeit the money. If one forfeited, then the money went to the other. If both agreed on either forfeiting or going ahead with the wager, then the umpire kept the money as payment. The custom, though not the name, is attested from 14c. Reference to horse racing is 1754 (Handy-Cap Match), where the umpire decrees the superior horse should carry extra weight as a "handicap;" this led to sense of "encumbrance, disability" first recorded 1890. Meaning "put at a disability," is the last to develop; handicapped (adj.) is 1915. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?l=h&p=2
The word handicapped was never used to describe a person with a disability in print prior to 1915. That can only be the proven by the absence of other evidence - and that is what I am looking for - the earlier evidence of handicapped used to describe people with disabilities.
As a lifelong student of the English language and 30 years experience as a print journalist, I'll add that I never knew of any reference to the disabled or beggars in the origin of the world handicapped.
It was long used in games -- and later in sports -- when one side held an advantage over the other, and some measure was needed to make it more competitive. It was later ported to golf, for example, and remains a mainstay in sports betting and gambling today.
In all respect, and I say this as a journalist, often executives and CEOs can be wrong about their information. A title doesn't mean a person knows everything.
Here's an example from early 2009. During a speech about the U.S. automobile industry bailout, I heard President Barrack Obama state that America was the country that invented the automobile. And remember he is the CEO of our country. In all due respect, he is historically inaccurate. He's among those, I feel, who mistakenly believe American Henry Ford invented -- or developed and introduced -- the internal-combustion vehicle.
Ford, instead, was the first worldwide to mass produce automobiles. That's an American accomplishment. From what I remember from my own studies long ago, the development and introduction of the automobile occurred years earlier in Germany, under the direction of engineer Karl Benz.
With so many word origins I've encountered in my work, the actual basis is subjective. Some will never be known for sure. When I was in college, I had a PhD-accredited history professor who stated that the word "sabotage" referred to the worker's dissent in France during the Industrial Revolution, when many saw their jobs replaced by machines. In one regard, he was correct in saying the word is derived from the French "sabot," a wooden shoe. But he asserted the word "sabotage" referred to the workers refusing to become subordinates to the machines, and would "walk around slowly" to impede the factories' production schedule.
I disagreed, however, from what I had discovered years before. The frustrated workers would often damage or defeat the machinery by throwing or placing wooden shoes into the gearing and mechanisms, causing breakdowns. Such acts became known as "sabotage," literally "an act done with a wooden shoe."
However, the instructor refused to accept my perspective. So, there was no winning there. He was the instructor, and that always made him right. At least, in his mind.
So, please remember that the origins of such words as "handicapped" may be never determined for sure, one way or the other.
