Bright ParadiseWhether looking for the sources of the Nile, the Niger, or the Amazon, penetrating the Australian outback, or searching for the Northwest Passage, the Victorians were intrepid explorers, zealously expanding the limits of science and human knowledge. In Bright Paradise, Peter Raby describes brave voyages and gives us vivid and unforgettable portraits of the larger-than-life personalities of Charles Darwin, Alfred Wallace, and Henry Bates, glorious examples of Victorian energy and confidence. He also explores wider issues such as the growth of knowledge and the spread of the empire.
Witty, provocative, and exciting in the breadth of its research, this book charts an important period of scientific advance and transforms it into a compelling narrative.

Does life get better? I guess you could say I’m having a quarter life crises. I’m twenty years old, well turning twenty this Friday the 13th. About eight months ago I moved out of my parent’s home after living there my entire life. I relocated to my grandmother’s house here after my brother moved back in with my parents and became very physically abusive towards me. Might I add he moved back in after getting in trouble with the law, potentially earning two strikes on his record. I still don’t understand why my parents pity him. After moving out I started having panic attacks, so I started going to counseling (didn’t help much) though the panic attacks have stopped. My current problem is I have this total loss of identity. I’m numb to who I am and what truthfully makes me happy or how to find happy. I lost the sense of family values after my parents didn’t stick up for me; I left home and the abusive brother every need was catered to. Living at my grandmothers has not been helpful. I absolutely can’t stand it here. I love art and feel like ever since I moved here I lost the artist in me. All I do is analyze my life, a process of thinking I’ve always done but not to this extent. I have a boyfriend and he is wonderful, I’m happy when I’m with him, it’s just so annoying not knowing where you’re going or what you want out of life. I used to be so confident and now I feel so small. I want to move out of my grandmother’s house but am not sure if that going to change anything. More bills to pay, leading to stress; I can live with out stress right now. I want to move down town, I feel alive there. I want to travel but how with no money. Its weird when the reality of life suddenly hits you. I know I sound extremely depressed but I only seem to get like this when I’m home, at my grandmothers. My question is…. Is the grass greener on the other side?? Do you think moving would help me or am I just imagining this bright life outside of this hell hole when in reality a new location just means I different looking hell hole. Lol you get what I mean? i ask myself that everyday, people try to console me and tell me its all up to me if i wanna make my life better. i guess thats true. i feel like my parents have neglected me and i have no finance and they cant even spare me a dime. i depend on my bf for support and i think its getting old. my parents tell me that they care about me and they would do anythign and everything for me but they havent. i feel like after the divorce in 1994, i was neglected, not only was the divorced finalized, i was also. i dont know what kinda pain you are going through, but jst remember that life is what you make of it. you cannot jst sit there and dwell on the stuff that stresses you out. go to school, get and education and life will be much better.
Train travel. Would you accept and praise the bright side of it all ? Hi,
There is the seemingly constant whinge about UK trains.
I have no personal connection with railway bods, but often do not see the problem.
I commute to London, from Letchworth to Kings Cross most days, and fail to see what the whingers are on about.
So ther is a missing train, or it is a tad late.
I just have a beer & get on the next one, as life is more important than being a bit late for something that probably isn't too important anyway.
Full praise to a member of staff at Kings Cross today, as he noticed that me left leg was a bit wonky. (after a bike accident, so it will get better)
He took my ticket to a collegue, who upgraded it to 1st class, and escorted me to the train.
I am no invalid, but it seems that most railway staff are genuinely helpful
The things usually run on time these days, buses are laid on if the line is knackered, wtc, etc.
OK, lines vary, and some may be far from up to scratch, so I will tip tthe balance a bit by praising the overall system.
Any thoughts ?
Bob
I think Britain has a far better rail system than most countries. The network is very dense and very frequent; trains are usually clean and despite the manufactured moans, usually punctual. When you analyse delays you soon discover than almost half of them are due to such incidents as vandalism, tresspassers on the track or criminal/anti social behaviour on trains. True we don't have the ultra high speed lines
like those in France and Spain, but the high level of investment in those
has rendered much of the rest of their systems infrequent or even closed altogether. Fares are obviously a real issue in the U.K.; the hugely expensive unbooked weekday morning fare from London to Manchester contrasts rather ludicrously with the £11 fare for the same journey booked a month in advance, so some passengers who cannot book ahead are paying the highest fares in Europe while others are paying the lowest.
What period of your life do you miss the most? I miss my elementary school years, life was beyond simple, My family life was good and we'd travel alot. Every day just seemed brighter. Good ol partying, dancing days !!
What do you think of a dark cave entrance with a bright blue light glowing from inside of it? What comes to mind when you are travelling in the woods in the dark and get to the outskirts of the woods, and miles ahead you see a cave and there's the biggest blue light that you ever seen in your life glowing out of the dark cave entrance? What comes to your mind? Well, first of all, there is NO way that i would be walking in the woods at night. But if i was, part of me would want to go check it out, while another part of me would want to keep walking with my friends.
where does a very bright but aging, non-degreed man find a job in high unemployment area metro Detroit? Married, mature, all-around good guy who enjoys life and people. Well read, well traveled; excellent social skills. Effective communicator; team player with a can-do attitude and leadership ability. Dependable, focused, willing and able. Much experience; quick study able to master new methods and technologies. But getting old and, alas, no degree. Army veteran. What can I do in the highest unemployment area in the country? Who needs good help? Where do I look?
You have been actively working with the folks at Michigan Works? If not, at least register via the link below.
The single most improtant thing you can do is network. Use all of your contacts, and their contacts, and their contacts contacts. Let everyone know you're looking for work. And please be very focused on exactly WHAT kind of a job you want. The worst interviews are the folks who say "anything" when you ask them what kind of work they're seeking. NOT a good answer. A recruiter, job developer, or contact can only help those who are focused on a specific job, company, or industry. Vague gets you nothing, and the competition is stiff in your market.
Conflicting Life/Desire: Need your valuable and informative advice? I'm working on pursuing what I want to do with my life. I desire to travel and see the world but not be away so long that I'm disconnected from my family. But it is something I desire. I'm into culture, traveling, discovering, gardening, tea and wine, holistic health & beauty, design, hands on work, and mroe. I'nm an adventurer and feel a constant void in my soul until I do what I love to do. Thing is, I have two young kids and want to be able to balance my life with their needs. I'm young, bright, passionate, and this is how I want to spend my life but be a mother no matter what. Can you help me with advice, and occupations that can help me acheive this? Also, how easy would it be to get up and leave and move to Greece and open up my own small coffee/wine shop or something? You see, I don't want much as far as material. My happiness is in my family, fufillement of my desires, and my surroundings....any valuable and positive advice? Couldn't say how easy it would be to pick up and move (although I've done it twice in my life). Do you at least speak the language? Are you married/living with the father of the kids? How does he feel about saying goodbye to all he's known? And if you're not committed to the father, how do you feel about willfully taking his kids and moving halfway around the world with them? Is that really fair to them just so that you can live out YOUR dream?
Bad-life situation,If you don't mind tell me what you think? So here's the story. I live with my mom and small sister.I am 14.We were an ordinary family, neither rich, nor poor.We were living in a town in the United Arab Emirates. Our life was nice. Then the town brings up these exams for all the doctors (my mom is one) .if you don't pass this exam, you cant work in the town.My mom didn't pass it,because she's Russian and her English was not perfect. Then she found a job in another town so we moved (it was the only job she found). We had to change our school, and as the town wasn't very big there was only 1 real english school, the others were arabic and indian-english ones. The english school was very expensive, but we couldnt go to any other school.now my mother is spending 97% of her salary on it (and her salary is pretty big).We cant go to any places, because all the money is for the school. All the people in that school are the richest in town.I always feel left out.We cant afford a big house here because the money is for school, they have houses with like 10 bedrooms and they have 10 cars a family.now they are travelling around the world (holidays) and i am left here. When someone asks me "where are u going today?"or "Where are you going for the summer?" i don't lie,but i feel so awful that i am not having such a bright life like them.I always stay home.I really envy them.I often have emotional break-downs.But i don't want to leave the school, its really nice. But when i see the things they have, the places they go,while i just freaking sit at home and do nothing, nothing at all,I feel something more than awful. I have no idea on what to do.Maybe someone can tell me here what to do. Please, help me as you would help your friend. I am friends with them. I am friends with them.i dont personally hate them. I'd be good friends with them, and then go along with them!
what do you think of people who find inspiration from within the dark side of life? I know a friend who spends her entire life reading ghost , devil and black magic books. She watches only such movies , talks only about them devils and ghosts and her flat is full of pictures and ornaments of freakish looking stuff such as wizards with long noses . I tried to get her out of it, by telling her to enjoy the bright side of life such as travelling , nature , philosophy and cooking, but she never listens to me I wonder why some people get hooked on the dark side of life? bobmalco, If you come to Donegal dont fail to come and see me ok Wearing necklaces with a guy nailed to a tree on them ain't exactly all sunshine and daffodils, either...
about how life is in the uk? hello im british myslef, i left the uk to teach english and travel the world in 2003, ive now saved enough to return and study a masters, to either become a teacher in the uk or an arts therapist. basically, i keep hearing all these horro stories that uk has gone hideously down hill and so many are heading away for a brighter life. my question, for a teacher, for example is leading a normal comfortable life possible? or is it just too much of a squeeze, would i be able to raise a home and family on a teachers salary? i really want to come back but half or me is thinking ill just renounce leading a so called normal life and keep doing what im doing. Yeah, it's only some parts that are spiralling down. The price of everything's just going up and up. My dad's a teacher though and we're doing ok, my mum has a part time job as a secretary. If you're careful and budget it's fine, all the teachers at my school seem happy.
does life get better?

Hi Paige,
I'm sorry this has happened to you. My younger sister is artistic and I really love seeing her artwork. I know it's hard sometimes trying to figure out why all these things happen to us in life. When I was 15, I was forced by circumstance to move from home (my whole family was) and I felt out of place for a long time. The term 'Displaced' is used to describe this event and at a young age, it can certainly be traumatic. It throws your sense of identity out the window, and your whole world literally goes upside down. An extreme version of this feeling is called Depersonalized and includes panic attacks and a few other symptoms.
Here's a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depersonalization
Although I don't think you have it to that degree, initially you may have felt that way. You might still feel this way, but I suspect only for a few moments. Sometimes when these things happen, we can't quite put our finger on it. Some counsellors are good and can pick up on it, others have no clue. The best person to ask though, is the person you see in the mirror and there are two people in that mirror. You, (obviously) and your boyfriend.
But you need to know what questions to ask right? This might help give you a base to work from.

I hope you are able to move on from this, and in my experience it really does get better. hang in there, and if you think going back to a counsellor is helpful, give it another try. You never know.

Polaroid Megapixel DISCOUNT LINK WWW. Customer Reviews: I recently purchased this camera after doing much research for a trip that I was going to be taking to San Francisco. Our other camera, a Canon EOS Rebel, is a digital SLR and is too bulky to travel with but we have gotten spoiled by the quick shutter speeds and flexibility of the light conditions. The t1234 was our answer for all of the conveniences of our SLR but in a small package. It takes fantastic pictures and the camera actually varies the shutter speed for conditions. You can leave this to the camera or you can actually set the f stop, aperture and shutter speed yourself. There are tons of options on this camera, however, I can see how the everyday shutterbug would find this camera to have too many options for a point and shoot. This camera blends the cool toys of point and shoots (like stitching together a panoramic) with the functionality of an SLR. The battery life is amazing too. I went 5 out of my 6 days snapping photos and still had a 1/4 of my battery left. My only little gripe is that the power button and play button are too touchy and I find myself accidently turning on the camera in my purse or pocket. It would have been nice to have a power button lock for those situations. But hey that is pretty minor for such an awesome camera. Plus it is an awesome color of green that the pictures don t do justice to. I hate having my stuff the same old dreary colors as everyone else and this camera catches EVERYONES
Seiko Watch DISCOUNT LINK WWW. Customer Reviews: Seiko has no peer in the quartz watch field despite its apparent mass this watch is very comfortable to wear and very user friendly. I use the alarm dial at the bottom for GMT time. For an all purpose wristwatch you won t worry about getting wet or beat up, it would be hard to top this one! It replaces a 15 year old Seiko quartz I bought for about the same price. (BTW, nothing wrong with the old model I just needed the GMT feature. preciseit s got a greak look.. I think of it as a device for measuring time as a jewelry the only problem is,when I clap my hands hard, the adjusting switch somehow pushes out and the part showing the day moves up or down to another day so I dont clap my hands hard no more when I m wearing the watch. and the price I paid for this watch was definetly a bargain My 3rd Seiko watch in 30 years, my other two are still in working order. This watch works great and looks even better. Great value for the money! Sport Watches Seiko Watch A rugged blend of style and function, this alarm chronograph watch is perfect for travel, work and play. This watch has a round black dial with large numbers and luminous hands and markers. The watch features a date window at the three o clock position and three sub dials. Panasonic 8.1MP DISCOUNT LINK WWW. Customer Reviews: I have a DSLR that I really, really like, but there are times when I want to travel with a minimum of gear. And then, of course, it s absolutely true that the best camera is the one you actually have with you when you see that once in a lifetime shot. I ve not been a Panasonic user before this and was actually quite leery of the brand based on professional reviews that complained about other Panasonic models suffering from a watercolor effect and heavy handed noise reduction artifacts. So I went with Fuji first and then Canon, but couldn t get happy with any of their offerings. So far, neither noise reduction artifacting nor watercolor effects are apparent in this iteration, the TZ 4. It is a gorgeous metal camera that is easy to hold by a guy with even fairly large hands, despite the fact that it s very compact. The menu system is quite straightforward and there are plenty of scene modes that at least approximate what a manual control camera might offer you. ISO, AF area, metering area, exposure compensation and bracketing, and white balance can all be manually set. There is no shutter or aperture priority, although you can specify the absolute minimum shutter speed the camera will choose, down to a full second. The custom white balance set feature is very well implemented, and I had no problem getting beautifully lit, correctly exposed existing light shots indoors using the image stabilization feature and low ISO.
