FAQ about Big Ed Flashlight

How many of you think that whiskey, vodka or any other 80 proof liquor is flammable - Part TWO? (Sorry, the last part of my former question got cut off, so if you haven't read the first part {Same title, but with no "Part Two" at the end}, this will not make much sense...Please go back and read it...It's poignant, informative and has been known to loosen those bunched up bowels, guaranteed...) .....After that, no matter what I proved with my experiments, I always made sure my butts were completely out, my campfires were 100% buried under dirt and extinguished and I ceased my habitual licking of 9 volt batteries. You know: the big, flashlight ones (They made my tongue feel fuuunny... I only do it now to trim up my nasal hairs. It works great, but you end up smelling burning boogers and smoldering hair for the next week...). So, like I said before, a lit cigarette can, under the right circumstances, be coaxed into igniting nearby, super-dry material, but most of the time, when they hit a liquid like gasoline, they just fizzle out like they were thrown into a puddle. So, should you test what I tested under controlled circumstances to glean the truth for yourself...? If you need to, yes, definitely, but for Gods sake, be careful (use goggles and have a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case. I was young and stupid when I did my experiments, so...). However, should you test my theories by flicking your cigarette butt into a puddle of gasoline at your local service station...? Ummm, NO. NO, NO, NO, do NOT do that, because, with my luck, for some %$#&-ed up reason, it WILL ignite, blowing up the station and then, afterwards, what remains of your charred, limbless, charcoal briquette excuse for a body will end up suing me into abject poverty and I'll end up living under a bridge somewhere teaching middle schoolers how to make a really cool fire out of "Aqua Velva", Vick's Vap-O-Rub and the flavor packet from a box of Mac'n'Cheese (Its also, undeniably, extremely stinky, as well...). This will, really, make me want to smoke a whole lot more and maybe start a few, harmless, four-alarm, abandoned warehouse fires, y'know, to let off steam. Look, do your research, test my theories if you want, but, for God's sake, PLEASE be careful... Godspeed to you cute little monkeys...

Co-ed Backyard Campfire Birthday Party...? My 14th birthday is in a month and i wanna do something fun; not just a bowling party and junk like that. I was planning on doing a backyard campfire, with smores and hotdogs and the classic cake and ice cream. Theres going to be about 10 girls and 10 guys, (spin the bottle would be fun...but my parents are right inside...) any ideas...? Decorations: - helium balloons tied to the trees. (i have a big yard with a ton of trees jsyk.) - paper lanterns - streamers Entertainment: - my friend has a projector i could use, and display movies on a white sheet hanging from a tree - flashlight tag (no matter how old you are...its still a great game) - roasting marshmellows and hotdogs - talking around the campfire. ALl of the girls are spending the night...all 10 of them; even though i have a tiny house haha. I would pitch a tent but because its april...its still too cold to sleep outside. The guys will go home at 11 or 12 and the girls will probably stay outside for awhile then come inside and play guitar hero and just dance and all that sleepover stuff. Any more ideas or suggestions? Tell me what you think! Thank you! ((: Sounds like you are set!
Maybe you could prepare some ghost stories (like off the internet) for the campfire. Maybe pick up a cheap strobe light at a party store and dance in the dark. It looks really cool and its a ton of fun. TRUTH OR DARE! Treasure hunt- with prizes? Guys love showing off, so maybe you could get some games going like a 3-legged race, charades, or just get a bunch of balloons and sit on them to pop them- you can break into teams and see who pops them all the quickest- girls against guys maybe? =)
Whatever you do make sure someone has a camera! Make sure the camera gets passed around because the funniest pictures happen when no one is looking!
Good luck and happy birthday!

Care to read over my college essay? (it needs to be shorter. What can I take out?) Generally, a wannabe Jew would avoid a United Methodist camp. But when you’re sixteen and your dad finds you a job, you take it. It hits you though, once you become the only person on permanent kitchen duty because you let it slip that you prefer Moses to Jesus, that this could be the hardest thing you’ve ever done. This was my situation: I was desperately trying to live my love of Judaism in a place where people would ask earnestly if I spoke “Jewish”. I quickly figured out that the only way to survive the ignorance at Gretna would be to remove it; to teach. And in teaching, I learned. I told people to ask me questions, and they did, all of them, everyday. If I didn’t know the answer, I looked it up. I came away from Jesus Camp knowing more about Judaism than most of the campers left camp knowing about the Holy Ghost. The teaching started long before I moved into the staff house in June. In April, as a sort of trial run, I had to spend two days trying to keep a bunch of five-to-seven year olds from running on the trails and throwing rocks. The overnight bit fell on the first night of Passover. Despite my situation, I decided to make Passover happen anyway. There was, of course, nothing remotely Seder plate-like within miles, and looking in the woods for something that might be a bitter herb probably wouldn’t end well. I had in my charge, though, a group of kids who had all probably seen The Prince of Egypt at least twice. I could make it work. In Philadelphia, if you can see six stars, you’re lucky. It’s one thing I hate most about the city. The camp sky, however, was Jackson Pollock-ed with stars and a big, fat moon. We didn’t even need flashlights until we got into our cabins. “What did you notice about the moon?” I asked my cabin. “It was big!” hollers one girl. “It was full,” corrects another. “Right, big moon. Now, how many of you have seen The Prince of Egypt?” There was a collective squeal of affirmation. I bit my cheek, worried that the head counselor might dime me out if I started carrying on about Jewish tradition. Was I losing my best shot at a summer job? Perhaps, shrugged my mind. I unclenched my jaw. “There’s a holiday that starts tonight.” Girls hung over the edges of their bunks to hear me. “It’s called Passover.” I told them everything I knew, starting from The Prince of Egypt. We imagined the Seder plate as I explained it. I pulled out a haggadah. “Baruch Atah Adonai” was like a spell I cast over them. I told them that they should always ask questions; why it was good. We all took long sips of wine in our minds and fell soundly asleep. So was the teaching. The next day went like any camp day. Let’s sing a song. We have to go this way. Please don’t throw rocks. At arts and crafts we made Mother’s Day cards. One of the girls gave me a makeshift envelope. I wasn’t allowed to open it until camp was over. Eventually, it was finally dinner. While the kids tucked into pasta with meat sauce and dinner rolls, I munched banana. Across from me, the girl who had given me the card was becoming the Sistine Chapel to Michelangelo’s spaghetti sauce masterpiece. “Hey Laura,” she chirped. “What’s up?” “You’re not eating spaghetti because it has flour.” I looked at her. I didn’t say anything. I just looked. She giggled. “It’s Passover.” "Yeah,” Slowly, I smiled. “Yeah, it’s Passover.” Inwardly, I was stunned that maybe they had actually learned. I couldn’t help a laugh. Nothing was funny, but something was good. On my way home, I pulled out the card. “Happy Pay Sock!” the pink marker screamed. I didn’t feel so hungry anymore. That was how I learned to teach; how I learned that I had to. That was the beginning; the beginning of teaching, of learning, and of becoming myself. Thanks for your feedback! Yeah, I think I'm just going to scratch this thing and start way WAY over. note to self: don't try to make app essays happen at 2 am. You were very intelligent to ask for a critique of your essay. My critique is going to be very tough, but you want a tough critique from me, not from an admissions officer. Please read my entire answer as I have some very encouraging words at the end.
I have a very thorough academic background in Judaism and therefore know many Jews. I am sorry to have to tell you that an essay which is deeply based in any religion, or in which you identify your current or desired religion, is totally inappropriate unless the college to which you are applying is operated by that religion. With the exception of Brandeis, all the Jewish-operated colleges in the USA are too traditionally oriented to favor students who would work at a camp where they would not have strictly Kosher food. So this essay would be suitable for Brandeis only, if it were suitable at all, which it is not.
The reference to Jackson Pollack sounds pretentious and is also inappropriate. People who know art would think about Van Gogh in that context.
Your use of Hebrew or any other foreign language is inappropriate.
Unless they are used in an academic context, references to religious figures, be they human or supernatural, are inappropriate in an admissions essay.
I don't know what a "wannabe" Jew is, but I do know that "wannabe" is not a "word" I would want in the opening of my essay or anywhere else in it, as it is slang and not a formal English word.
The reference to minors, including yourself and the younger children, even imagining drinking wine is inappropriate, especially as you have credited yourself with expanding their imaginations in this area, which is, in fact, off limits to some Methodists even as adults..
You also need to clean up your syntax and diction as well as a few grammatical errors, but it is very clear to me that you can write English well if you make a special effort to write more formally than you did in this essay. An admissions essay is a formal document. It is written differently from a letter to a friend.
How can your essay be fixed?
Make it a general essay about how you taught your campers and how they and you grew from the experience. Please feel free to email your revised essay to me. If it is too long for one email on this system, send it in several consecutively numbered parts.
I will work with you until it is perfect, so long as you work diligently.
I hope I have saved your college admissions process from disaster!
If I did not want to help you, I would not have taken a half hour to write this critique. I look forward to helping you further if you wish.

How do I handle this financial situation with my sister? Over the years my sister and I have not been very close. Usually it is a few years on of talking then a few years off. So our relationship has always been strained. 16 days ago, Hurricane Ike swept through my neighborhood! I text-ed my best friend in Georgia, who kindly sent emails to my family and friends to let them know how we were doing since we have been without power for 15 days. My family knows we have been spared so much as we have seen the devastation around us. We have a fence down, broken motion lights, one tree that fell, one more tree that has started to uproot so that needs to come down as it is leaning toward our house, stucco that needs to be repaired on the front of our house etc. Our insurance adjuster is supposed to be out this week to inspect our roof. Some of our neighbors have had much more damage then us and we have been trying to help them get thorough. But we are alive and very grateful! We have 10 people in our family (My husband, myself and 8 children) We did have a generator that ran our frig and a few fans to help us get through. But by no means has it been easy. Getting homework done by flashlights, doing laundry in the tub, fighting mosquitoes, just to name a few. During this time, all of our neighbors came together to help one another, helping cut downed trees, sharing food, and just making talk! We took our next door neighbor under our wing and made sure she had ice for her medication, a hot meal off our grill most nights etc (as she is single and elderly) We did offer our home but she refused to leave her pets over night. I did go to one of the PODS (for ice, water, MRE's) and took all the kiddos with me. When we arrived they asked how many families were were helping and I explained to them what I was trying to do. Help all the neighbors on my corner since I had the bigger van. All of my neighbors were shocked that I thought of them after waiting for two hours in line. They said they would have never thought to tell anyone that they were helping the rest of the neighbors. By the time I got home, everyone was waiting for me in the driveway!! Never would I have expected to see so many thrill excited people! It was well worth it to me...the long wait to help my neighbors even though the kiddos were cranky. Nonetheless, my sister works at a walmart store and she called me 5 days after the storm and told me that they were having a potluck on our behalf to help us out. This is the first thing my sister has ever done for me..I was overjoyed people that we did not know were coming together to help us. My sister called me after the potluck! They raised 455.00 for us. WOW!! With price goudging, long lines, short supplies on money and food...my thought was I can help my neighbors out more. That same night my sister called to tell me, they have been behind on their van payment and they just received a letter saying if they did not pay the one payment they were behind the van will be repossessed. (hummm...the timing of it all!) I told her if she needed to use the money fine. Her response was I will get the money to you tomorrow (8 days days after the storm-Saturday). If I kept and used the money that would be unethical. Wow!! My sister is growing up..I thought! Monday my sister called (10 days after the storm) and said to me...is it okay if I borrow the money, I will pay you back. (Keep in mind she owes her in-laws 7K and she is always borrowing money from people) But she is always taking trips to visit people out of state, eatting out ect. (For my sister it is her, her husband and 2 children and they make about 50K a year) I told my sister...do what you think is best. Her response to me was, I don't know if you need the money more then we do. I told her I could not answer that! All I could tell her was, our local credit union was closed and we had no access to any money and the one bank that we had access to had 210.00 in the account. Again she said she would send the money tomorrow. I called her Wednesday to ask her if she decided what she was going to do, she said "I send you a money order, I kept some money and I sent you some money...this way it BENEFITS us both" I of course am talking to my best friend about this and she sent my sister a letter. Telling my sister how everyone is in financial distress and how selfish it is of her to raise money at work for our family here and then for her (my sister) to try to benefit for herself. My friend told her outright, if she kept a penny of the money she would be committing fraud amoung her co-workers. My friend also asked if my sister told her co-workers what she was thinking about doing and that my friend was thinking about calling her manager to tell them what she was doing. My sister called and left a message that the remaining money would be in the mail. She did not want my friend calling her job because she would get fired and she said that she thought I could be a sister that could help he You've written a very articulate post. I'm so sorry for what you and your neighbors have been going through; we went through the same thing after Charley; people who haven't been through the aftermath of natural disasters can't imagine how awful it is.
Your sister is a piece of work, isn't she? I don't know what else there is to say, other than what your friend said, Your friend is exactly right. Raising money for charity and using it yourself is fraud, which is a crime. You know your sister is a manipulative user; it sounds as if you have a long history of this nonsense with her. If I were you, I'd just reiterate what your friend said, and put it in such a way that it sounds like you are concerned about her, because that's what will hit home with her. Tell her that if it should get out that she kept any of the money for a van payment, she could lose her job and criminal proceedings could be instigated against her. Why take that chance?

Ten times project. Materials? In this project we were given an item to make exactly 10 times bigger. I got a flashlight. And i have to make each aspect of that flashlight 10 times bigger. ie diameter of each of the circles exactly 10 times bigger and like length exactly ten times bigger. The length of the flashlight will end up being about 5 feet long after it is times-ed by ten. I actually have to make this so if you have any suggestions on the materials i could or should use help out. please and thank you. :D I'm not sure how accurately you have to keep to the original but if it is simply a flashlight that is 10 times bigger and not a replica of that particular one then you could use some large size plastic tubing for starters.

Teens your opinion on 2012. plus bq? I was watching a show on CNN about 2012. And I deli Ed how out of control this is getting. They did show some interesting people like • these two Swedish guys are building a colony on this mountain for people who survive 2012 if it happened • this guy in Arizona is going to throw himself off a cliff at exactly11:11 on that day because that's when the winter season starts • and this one guy who has a successful internet site for what you need to survive. Like rice, gas mask, flashlights. And he swears he ain't doing it for the money • and some people are building fall out shelters under their house. How is that gonna help if there is an earthquake? I really don't get it. Why would you wanna live if billions are dead? You will be eating canned goods And rice for the rest of your miserable life. I think Christians are to blame when it comes to this becoming a bigger deal than the y2k scare. Bq1: would you wanna live of of rice and canned goods for the rest of your life? Bq2; who do you think is responsible for this thing becoming so out of hand? Bq3: how many days can you eat canned goods and rice until you get tired of it? Bq4: on a scale 1-10 how scared are you because of this? Oh please. People have been predicting the end of the world and putting it on different dates for a long time. It's obviously never been correct. So I don't believe the worlds ending.
