How much hard disk noise is normal? Hello all,
I bought a new computer in August, and since day one, the hard drive has been clicking rather consistently. It's a constant noise when it happens (several times a minute), presumably when it's writing data (as it coincides with the activity indicator light), and sounds similar to a bicycle wheel spinning.
Is this normal? Every now and then the heads will park and make a slightly louder click, but aside from these noises nothing else seems wrong. Notebook Hardware Control and HD Tune show no errors, and chkdsk seems to agree with them.
My concern comes from the reputation that noisy hard drives have for dying and destroying data. I have my data backed up by Acronis TI 10, but I'd rather not test it.
The computer, if you were wondering, is a Sony VAIO CR190 Notebook (one review reports a similar clicking), running Vista on 2GB of RAM and a 2.0GHz Intel Core2 Duo processor. The HD speed is 5400 RPM.

There are no driver or firmware updates for the drive (Fujitsu MHW2120BH).
There is no BIOS setting for "quiet" mode.
NHC's "quiet" mode did nothing.
It's hard to answer this without actually hearing the device, but here's what I can add.
It is quite possible that your drive is failing even though it doesn't indicate a problem. One of my maxtor drives seemed to be free of any defects and had the same noise problems you described (it almost got annoying), and within a few weeks, died a pitiful death.
Every hard drive clearly has different levels of noise, but I've personally never had one in a (newer) laptop that is very noticeable. I'm typing this on my macbook pro, and almost never notice the hard drive.
You made a good choice by backing up your drive, but the next step would be to ask yourself -- is it annoying enough to warrent a replacement? If it isn't, then just cross your fingers and see what happens -- it may just be a loud drive, and there isn't much you can do. Otherwise, if the noise bothers you -- call Sony and get them to send you a replacement. Unfortunately, you might be out of a laptop for a while if they ask you to send it in.

On the sample paper, the colour looked light yellow. when I reviewed the colour on the behr website, it looked school bus yellow! ( which is exactly what i didnt want my room to look like) how is my room really going to turn out!? The color on the website is going to depend on the settings of your computer monitor and how it's calibrated. It is not accurate for picking paint color. Whatever the sample paper is is the color of the paint. However, I will warn you, ALL yellow paint appears brighter when it gets on the wall. If you want really pale yellow walls, you have to go with a paint chip that looks almost cream. Learned this lesson the hard way painting a room yellow once. The paint chip was pale, but once it got on the walls, it was big-bird, school bus yellow. When it comes to painting walls yellow, always go 2 shades lighter than what you think.
How can you "outrun light" on a bicycle? I came off my bicycle in the dark today - didn't see a bump, pushed me into a gutter, lost it, spun, ouch. So, I want to buy a new (more powerful) light, and I've been looking at the reviews of the HID lights, and a lot of them seem to say things along the lines of "if you travel at 20-25+ mph you can outrun the light".
Does anyone know what this actually means? To me if you're moving at 25mph you're still 670616604mph off being able to outrun the light.

You can't really out run the speed of light.... BUT, the visual distance that it covers can be less than your reaction time. It lights up two seconds out. BUT, your stopping distance and reaction time is four seconds out. You really do not see the danger until it is too late!
There is an excellent article in this months "Bicycling Magazine" re: lights and visibility. With lots of suggestions and equipment reviews. Well worth the price, and a good read to boot!

I went to my bus stop a couple days ago and it was pitch black. I looked down a road and I saw what looked like two people were wearing lamps on their heads that were about 14 inches tall and 6 inches wide. They glowed red like lights. They appeared to be on a bicycle. They were coming towards me at a constant speed and then turned into the woods. The moved from left to right and moved farther and closer together. That rules out the possibility of a car. No one else saw it because the 2 kids at my bus stop were looking the other way at something. I have never taken drugs, if that is what you are thinking. I wish I could describe it better. I was trying to capture pictures of shooting stars, when I reviewed my pictures, there were orbs in my pictures. There has never been any sign or anything that would make me think of ghosts in or near my house. I thought of the orbs like 15 minutes after I saw these orbs. Could these be aliens or ghosts? I can not believe what I saw. I WAS NOT DREAMING. I know for sure that I was awake, I was holding a coffee and I could feel its warmth. Please help me figure out what I saw. It was at 6:00 in the morning. I dont think it was a prank, + all the other kids are going to school at that time too.

No it was not a police bike. My town does not have any police bikes and my town has blue lights not red.
What you saw was on the ground, so it has nothing to do with either space or astronomy. And you picture link didn't work for me.
You say it was, "pitch black", so it would have been hard to see normally and you would be subject to making all kinds of mistakes in interpreting what you saw. It is it possible that you saw any number of ordinary things, like regular full size people riding bicycles with head lamps, like those camping LED flashlights on a head band. In a dark night they can easily be far away but give the illusion of being much closer and therefore smaller than regular people.
You would be surprised at how much your thinking effects what you see. Once you get the idea they are 14 inches tall and very close it can be really hard to see them as regular size people much farther away unless you actually go up to them and touch them. It is just the way our minds work.

Good bicycle for light exercise? I am planning to buy a bicycle(hybrid) I don't want to spend more than 250.00. I have been reading about different brands, but I can make my mind. I almost decided for a Schwinn, but have read some controversials reviews.
Any suggestion?
For light exercise I personally would not recommend a fully suspended moutain bike.
I purchased a Specialized Crossroads for my partner and she loves it. It has a light duty front shock that's not heavy and a suspended seat post with a nice cushy seat. If you are looking to pedal around the park with your family or run errands around town, I would recommend a bike like this. I'm sure other brands have something comparable. I believe this model is also in your price range.
As someone else said, go to your local bike shop. Most of the time they are very helpful. If you are as specific with them as you were here, they will show exactly what you need and explain the pros and cons of different brands and let you make up your mind.
