How to Power a Light with a Bicycle? Lets imagine that you want to power a lamp in your bedroom. The light bulb is connected to a 12 volt car battery. You want to pedal a bicycle to charge the battery. What accessories are needed to make this happen? how will it work? how much pedaling is needed to charge the battery? how long will the battery last with the light on before it needs another charge? I know its a lot of questions.. although i'm thinking about going green. Unfortunately, powering a light by pedaling a bicycle is not very efficient, at all. Burning coal to spin enormous turbines is.
If you really wanted to though, you would connect the pedals to spin a generator which would power the battery and then the light.
But I doubt this would work too well, if you want to "go green" solar panels would be better.

Replacing the Light Bulbs on a Vintage Bicycle...? Does anyone know what I need to do to replace the lightbulbs on an old vintage bicycle? The light bulb should not be difficult to replace. There are a couple of screws that open the shell and the light bulb itself is probably the screw type. You could take it to Radio Shack and they should have some replacement.
Now, if you are thinking about buying it to ride, be aware that it is missing the chain for what I see on the pics. That could be more problematic than the light bulb.

Why don’t liberals understand that conservation is practically pointless? Every time you shut off a light bulb; 1300 Chinese turn one on. Every time you ride a bicycle; 1000 people in India start a car. China and India have both added a middle class the size of our entire national population in the last five years. That's over 300 million people and they all want electricity and petro and a modern life style. This is expected to happen again in the next five years. How are we going to conserve ourselves into prosperity if the world is growing so rapidly? I'm not liberal by any stretch of the imagination. That said, China is literally a cesspool with all the pollution the eminate because growth trumps everything else. Also, we don't get our electricity from China or India, we get it here. Conserving just makes sense to save money and protect our environment. Conserving will allow us to do more with less.
I understand your point and you make a lot of sense. However, to say, "the hell with it, I'm just going to leave the refridgerator door open and leave all the lights on the house while I'm at work to prove a point" doesn't make any sense.

light bulb for electric bike, anyone know where to buy one? Can someone tell me where I might be able to purchase a 40 Volt 10 Watt light bulb for an electric bicycle. It uses a 36 Volt 10 amp system. The bulb is usual incandescent type (filament) with a screw mount. If you have ANY idea that would work (eg using a car bulb with a resister or halogen or whatever) please let me know also. Thanks The mounts are fairly standardized. Go to a good lightbulb website like www.topbulb.com. Look up the diagrams for screw mounts until you find yours & then try to narrow it down to your voltage and current.
If need be, you can be deviate from the correct amperage & it will still work. The best bulbs are halogen, xenon, krypton, & argon or vacuum; in that order.
You could ask the bike dealer for contact info on the bike manufacturer.

How much electrical power could the average human produce with a bicycle? I know there are power meters for bicycles used by racers for training and such, but how much of that power could actually be harnessed by a generator affixed to the bicycle? Assume a pretty fit rider. I'm guessing one rider could power one 100 watt light bulb continuously, is that a decent ballpark guess? 100 watt is a good guess. At the Science Museum near where I live there was a pedal-powered device that people could experiment with. When I tried it I got 4 150 watt bulbs to light up.
EDIT: You're right linlyons, they were glowing but not fully lit. Dunno why I forgot that part...oh well.

Why does it become more difficult to pedal a bicycle-powered generator as the load increases? A bicycle-powered generator is hooked up to a light bulb. The rider pedals the bike, lighting the bulb. A second bulb is added to the circuit, and it becomes harder to pedal. Why does this happen as opposed to having to pedal the bike faster? Thanks!!! Zargon - Thank you! Hopefully I remember to come back and give you best answer for that. i'm no expert here, but i would guess that if you increase the power of one bulb that would be true (increases speed), but adding quantity instead increases the difficulty.

Can I replace the tungsten bulbs in my old bicycle dynamo with modern LEDs? Though I much prefer it to using battery powered lighting, I'm getting tired of the frequency of which I'm having to replace the rear lamp on my bicycle dynamo. LEDs are of course much brighter and last far, far longer, and I've discovered a website that sells them for pretty much the same price as the old tungsten bulbs. Will these work with the unstable voltage that a dynamo provides? Yes, but you'll need to add an electrolytic capacitor to the mix- between the bulb and the dynamo. The capacitor value should be pretty easy to work out. Most anyome that works in an electronics repair shop could tell you exactly what you need if you can provide the maximum output of the dynamo.
Here's how it would work: the dynamo places a charge into the capacitor and the capacitor lights the LED. Easy.

Vehicle/Bicycle Lighting Regulation in Australia? Hello everyone, I have some lovely and colourful LED lights (small light bulbs) brought back from overseas. The lights are like those on bicycles you see on the street, those flashing front and rear LED lights. But my one is not flashing, it's solid and has various colours.. blue and purple.. They are not for lighting purpose, just for decoration only (maybe safety too?). I was just wondering could I place them on my bicycle and old Astra ? Does anyone know where to find the regulation regarding this stuff? perhaps a government website? i need a source which is correct and valid so i won't break the law and get ticketed by the police .. I've noticed that even experienced-looking cyclists with all the gear are still hardly visible from the point of view of other traffic at night. ( i drive too).
Now regardless of regulation
i have noted clearly that THE ONLY cyclists who are clearly visible at night have TWO strong lights mounted front (ie head lamp AND bike lamp) as well as more importantly in traffic TWO strong red lights mounted backwards. Fast flashing can help visibility.
Bright reflective vests, shirts etc are very good too.
Anyway, i would be more concerned with your safety riding at night than "regulations". Maybe just get one strong light front and one back and add the led's to improve visibility.
BUT IF THEY DON'T FLASH THEN THEY'LL BE HARDLY VISIBLE IN THE BUSY LIGHTS OF NIGHT TIME TRAFFIC.
Ultimately its your decision, and i live in australia and i've not seen a police officer charge a cyclist, but i suggest that because of the unknowable drivers out there put SAFETY before REGULATION. Because i for one am always on the lookout for cyclists on the road (being one at times) and if i have to concentrate hard to see night time cyclists imagine all the half blind drivers who aren't looking for you!
