CCW Question (revised)? Alright, I've asked a similar question before and now I'm asking again with more details. I'm going to be purchasing a handgun for CCW purposes within the next 2-3 months. Here're the specifications I'm looking for: -Chambered in 9mm -Semiautomatic -Compact (smaller than full size, bigger than subcompact) -Reliability (no recorded defects/minimal jamming) -From a reliable company -Affordable I asked a similar question a month or so ago and got mixed responses that left me even less unsure as what to buy. I had my heart set on a Beretta Px4 Storm Compact until I saw the price ($550, Ouch!). There are several other models that I am considering now including the Glock 19. What's your experience with guns that meet these specifications and what would you suggest I purchase? Website links would be helpful, as would product reviews if you have experience with it. Beretta Storm CX4 and PX4 for new shooter in ontario? (Laws and recommendations) Serious only PLZ? Hi there, ok so basically im 18 and i want to get into the ontario or barrie police forces... I have shot a gun once long time ago at a range, i was problly about 12 at the time, and so i am basically a new shooter. I am very willing to shoot, not affraid about it at all, however, i need advice! (BTW I am going to go shooting eventually to get a feel for the guns before i buy one, but i do want advice to be prepared for when i go) So Im looking at the CX4 and PX4 Storms, a rifle and pistol duo, i know they have various models between the two of them so to be more specific, i would like the CX4 JX4P415 Rifle (.40 S&W) and the Fullsized PX4 (Unsure of model number or if there even are variations on the gun other then caliber) Pistol (Also .40 S&W). Price is not the biggest factor in my choice here, I want quality, and i am willing to pay allot for it, i dont know about gun pricing and such, so is the 900 for the rifle and 600 for the pistol allot? And more importantly, is the quality of these guns worth the price tag? I really want the BEST of the best! (Or atleast very comparible to the top rifles, i realise there is no specific "Best"). Are there any guns you would recomend over the CX4 and PX4 (Not based on price, based on quality)? BTW, i really like the look of the CX4, so unless preformance of another gun is a durastic improvement, or if the other rifle looks pretty too (not the basic rifle design), please do not suggest it. If the other gun is much better, please do list it! I would like to get that specific CX4 and accompaning Px4 so that the magazines are interchangable, because it would be a GREAT convienience to only have to have one type of mag... The Mags i have found that would go with the PX4 are JM4PX4017 and the JM4PX4014, the only difference being 14 or 17 rounds... SO A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION (The main one on here): Would you advise going with the .40 cal listed above, or do you recomend a 9mm? I am a very big guy, strong wrists arms etc, so would i really tell any difference in shooting the two? ALSO, is there any difference in the "stopping power" between the two calibers 9mm and .40? MY MAIN CONCERN is really will they stop anything that is coming at me? Con: Polymer Fiber-I like Metal-, Price, looks, and double acton only. 3.Beretta Storm Px4 9mm Pro:Price, New rotating barrel, 9mm, Looks, Not ev erybody has it. Are all the things that I have stated true? I actually prefer my CZ 9mm over my Glock 9mm. CZ has a better feel than the Glock but both are great. But a Glock .40 is fantastic. Beretta Px4 Storm - 9mm or .45ACP? I am thinking of purchasing a Beretta Px4 Storm handgun for both Concealed carry and home defence. The only decision i have to make is what caliber. It's either the 9mm or the .45, as for some reason I'm just not a fan of .40SW. Things for consideration are mag capacity, stopping power and ammo price. (I would appriciate if I dont get a load of BS about 12gauge being best for home defence) Thanks guys. I would choose the .45 ACP over the 9mm anyday. Forget about mag capacity. Shot placement is of the utmost importance. What good is having 17 rounds in the guns, and you can't hit anything, or the round is ineffective. The old Colt 1911 only held 7 in the magazine and done the job well for the military for over 86 years, before some pencil pushing bureaucrat decided 9mm was the way to go, and now the military is thinking about switching back to the .45ACP in a more modern handgun.

Looking for a handgun for defense, recreation and quality. What do you recommend? I have hunted all my life and enjoyed guns but have never really got into handguns so I'm not as familiar with them as I would like. That being said, I need some help to choose the right gun. I shot the sig p226 the other day and enjoyed it but I'm looking for something a little more compact and my price range is around $600. I really like the Beretta PX4 storm .40 compact or even sub compact. Again this gun is for defense first recreation second and needs to be durable. I looked at the Kahr and I liked what I saw, and will add that to my list of guns to shoot at the range. Try and sell me on the Glock cause I'm hearing mixed reviews from people on the internet and the range but allot of people also like them. Why not the Baretta PX4 storm compact? I have also heard allot of good stuff about the sig 229 but its a little pricey I think, so I looked at the p250, my only concern is the double action. Other than that it is super light and has a good feel. @ Dukket thanks for the link. The CZ looks really good based on the reviews also. There are some many different brands in the handgun market. With a shotgun or rifle its so much easier. @ Rik I am interested in the compact because I can put it in a vehicle compartment or if I get comfortable enough to conceal. You said the .40 is the less accurate than other rounds or just compacts in general? For the money I need something very well engineered so I agree with less moving parts, so which brand falls into that category? the springfield XD(M) .40 subcompact is really nice and comes with two extra mags, a holster, a duel mag holster, and a cleaning kit.

Which .45 handgun to buy? Beretta (Italy) or Ruger (US)? I am a US citizen so I'd like to support a US company. But I also have Italian heritage and am learning the language so I wouldn't mind supporting Italy either. I like these two guns because they have a decent price tag and decent reviews. What's a good pistol cleaning kit? I'm getting a 4'' Beretta Px4 Storm, 9mm and I'm looking for a great cleaning kit to go with it. What's one that I can get at a great price? Maybe online, or at a store? Also, what other accessories should I get with my gun, besides a gun case? You'll most likely end up getting either a cleaning kit made by Hoppe's or Outer's because that is what most gun stores carry. Either is fine I have a set of each and a few others. I tend to take the best from each. I tend to like both bronze brushes and nylon brushes for handguns. I also get a pointed brass cleaning jag that fits the barrel diameter and stay away from the little slotted jags. A tooth brush for cleaning the action is also good to have. I tend to used Hoppe's solvent and either Rem Oil or Billistol as oil. Buy your cleaning pacthes in bulk, they never go bad.
As for what else, Any tools you need to take it down I'd get one just for that firearm or only for firearms like screwdrivers and or allen wrenches. Each of my handguns has at least three magazines or more.

How does a .40 S&W differ from a 9 mm and .45? Could anyone please comment on the differences between a 9mm, .40 and .40 S&W handgun in terms of: 1. Power 2. Recoil 3. Price of ammunition? Also, I'm interested in any thoughts about the benefits or drawbacks of the Beretta PX4 (my understanding is that it can shoot both 9 mm and .40 S&W cartridges--is this correct?) vs a standard 9 mm or .40 S&W. Thanks. The .40 started life as a 10mm round. A very powerful round that was adopted by the FBI. But the agents complained about the stout recoil and so the bastard step child, the .40 "Short & Weak" was born.
Another reason for the .40 was an attempt to get .45 ACP performance and 9mm capacity out of the round. Of course, you don't really get either.
As a compromise of capacity and power, the gun does not do too badly. It has become a popular choice with law enforcement. Still, if you want to "hose the street", a 9mm is the only way to go. If you want to punch gaping holes, my .45ACP, 200 gr. jacketed hollow point, at about 1000 fps is the only way to go.
Recoil? Well, if you can't handle a 9mm recoil, you shouldn't even own a gun. The difference in .40 and .45 gets interesting. The 155 gr. .40 round is pleasent to shoot but does not perform much better than a 9mm. The 165 gr and 180 gr. loads pack a punch but recoil is pronounced. In fact, my .45 ACP, 200 gr. load is better behaved. Loads like the 230 gr. +P .45 ACP rounds are very powerful rounds but recoil can be heavy.
I reload all my practice ammo, so I only buy "carry ammo" about once a year. "Sticker Shock" hurts worse than recoil. The 9mm stuff is still the cheapest on the market. The .40 and .45 ammo is almost the same price, running about $25 to $35 a box here in Wyoming.

Info about these pistols? I recently posted another question asking opinions about some pistols I was looking at. I have narrowed it down based on price and safety features. I would appreciate further info on the following in 9mm and compact/4 inch barrel: Springfield XD or XDM , Beretta PX4 Storm, and S&W M&P With these I'm most concerned about reliability, safety and ease of maintenance. Going to the Indy 1500 gun show tomorrow BTW. Thanks! I don't have a whole host of information about the other two, but if I had the choice to pick between all of them, I'd pick the Springfield XDm, hands down.
Safety - a 1911-style grip safety, as well as the trigger safety (similar to the type on Glock pistols).
Reliability - it survived (and surpassed) the Glock torture test with flying colors.

Ease of Maintenance - pretty simple to field strip. Just take out the mag, lock back the slide, turn down the tab in the front, release the slide and remove it. Not hard to clean it. And it's a tank enough of a gun that it can go without cleaning.
I'd opt for the XDm over the XD. The XDm 3.8 (the compact XDm) has a 3.8" match-grade barrel and a capacity of 19 rounds, as well as plenty of other goodies. Regardless, I'd still love to have the XD if I couldn't afford the XDm.
