Is there an inverter for a 6v lantern battery? I'm going camping next week and need to power my cpap for 6-8 hours per night for 4 or 5 nights. I've looked at a few options, and found lantern batteries at about $3. If I can use them with an inverter, it seems the most economical solution, and the least amount of space taken up in the van. Any insight? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First, an inverter is terribly inefficient!!! Your CPAP machine SHOULD have a 12V connection, if it does not, contact your durable meds person and get one that does.. MINE DOES...
Next, you need to do the math, your CPAP machine will have details in the owners manual on how much current the machine draws on 12V. Mine is 2A.
2 amps times 8 hours means you need 16 amp capacity.
A standard lantern battery is 6v 4A, so you will need two in series for 12V 4A. That will last about 2 hours. You will need four times as many 12V 4A batteries for a total of eight 6V lantern batteries.

I want to add a car horn to a bicycle and power it with a 12V, 7.5Ah alkaline lantern battery. The actual answer will probably have to be determined experimentally, since we don't know how the battery's current delivery will diminish as it discharges, or what the internal resistance of the battery is, but assuming that the car horn draws about 5 amperes of current at 12V, the 7.5 Amp-hour rating means that it could ideally run the horn for about an hour and a half. That's about 5,400 one-second presses.
The big question is whether the battery is designed to handle a 5-amp load. That 7.5 A-h rating may be assuming a much smaller current draw.

THanks for your advisement. no, they are not "filled" with AA batteries. they are made from 4 cells, that is how they are 6 volts instead of 1.5 volts. But the cells are not regular batteries in cylinder metal cases like you would get at the store. they are squared off and in individual plastic "baggies". only the outer case is metal. if you plan on taking one apart, remember that there is acid and corrosive gel inside.

This converts to 60 watt-hours.

Are there really AA batteries inside a V lantern battery? I saw a video online that shows a person tearing apart a 6V lantern battery and finding 32 AA batteries inside. some companies find it cheaper to combine 1.5 batteries into a large 6 volt, others find it cheaper to make new cells to produce that voltage.

The largest size motor depends on Amperage you want from the battery. A lantern battery is kind of small but I understand the size restriction. Look up the battery manufacturers ratings for the battery Amp-Hour rating of a fresh battery. This is the normal Amps the battery can supply for one hour. If you want double that time, reduce current by one half. From this data you will end of with amps for the time you need. Then it becomes necessary to find a motor whose full load curreent closely matches this Amperage. One place to look into is All Electronics.com to find inexpensive motors. It might be hard to find 6 volters but a 12V DC motor might be usable if you accept the less powerful result. Another idea is to look into sealed 12V gel batteries or even hook in series Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (NiMH type). They can be recharged and have higher Amperage ratings for the same volume.
