Canon camera flash does not fire works w/o flash.? I have Canon A540 lately cannot take photo with flash on. Although I can take photos when flash is off but when I turn the flash on ( auto or forced flash on) the flash indicator on the screen keeps blinking and nothing happens. I also tried waiting for around 20 sec once after pressing the button to take photo. I looked at other posts which mentioned abt delays becoz of battery problems. I am using rechargable Energizer 2500mAh NiMH batteries although the batteries are old > 2 yrs not sure thats the problem. I also tried reducing flash level to -2 from default 0. Olympus 550SP-uz camera, is very hard on batteries.? I am using duracell 2650 rechargeable AA, 2700 AA

I mostly use the camera on auto, because if I change the settings, I might only get 5-10 photo's. I use a charger that takes 14-15 hours to charge, so I am always charging. Can you suggest anything or some different type of battery.

Keep the LCD screen turned off when not being used. Use the viewfinder as much as possible, although it is electronic too. Turn off the camera after you finish taking a shot where you are not taking another one within a minute or so.
I am surprised it takes so long to charge your Ni-mh batteries .. mine take less than a hour ...do you have a slow charging cycle charger?
The state of the art rechargeable batteries are the Li-ion's. The can take up to 300 photos between charges, if you manage your batteries power as described above.
I can only speak to my old 1600 mAh Nimh batteries (over six years old) and my over five year old Li-ion batteries. Both types are still going strong.
