How can I wire 2 laser pointers to run off a 6v lantern battery? Each originally ran off three 1.5v (I think) button cells. Can I use 2 resistors to get a voltage drop of around 4.5 volts and connect the pointers to this in parallel? What's the best way to do this? I have shorted the switches on both pointers, and intend to turn them both on/off simultaneously. Two resistors might work; you're effectively creating a resistance or impedance in order to take the 6V source down to a 4.5V source. However, the pointers might be expecting to have some particular amount of current available as well, and of course your resistors might not be able to provide that. So if your resistance is too high, you might violate an assumption of the laser pointer; and if your resistance is too low, you'll just drain your battery with the voltage divider.
It would help if you took an ammeter and measured the current going through the laser pointer when it's functioning. You might even be able to skip the first resistor in your voltage divider, if you can get a good measurement of this.

First, an inverter is terribly inefficient!!! Your CPAP machine SHOULD have a 12V connection, if it does not, contact your durable meds person and get one that does.. MINE DOES...
Next, you need to do the math, your CPAP machine will have details in the owners manual on how much current the machine draws on 12V. Mine is 2A.
2 amps times 8 hours means you need 16 amp capacity.
A standard lantern battery is 6v 4A, so you will need two in series for 12V 4A. That will last about 2 hours. You will need four times as many 12V 4A batteries for a total of eight 6V lantern batteries.

If I were to draw 7 amps from a 6v lantern battery how long would it last? The truth is I'm hoping to convert an electrical leaf blower to cordless, it's 7 amps. some companies find it cheaper to combine 1.5 batteries into a large 6 volt, others find it cheaper to make new cells to produce that voltage.

THanks for your advisement. no, they are not "filled" with AA batteries. they are made from 4 cells, that is how they are 6 volts instead of 1.5 volts. But the cells are not regular batteries in cylinder metal cases like you would get at the store. they are squared off and in individual plastic "baggies". only the outer case is metal. if you plan on taking one apart, remember that there is acid and corrosive gel inside.

6v lantern battery amp hours? I have looked all over the internet and manufacturers sites, but I cannot find the amp/hour rating of a "typical heavy duty" lantern battery such as that from rayovac. I have seen some alkaline versions with approx ratings of 11-13 amp hours but none for a standard zinc chloride version. HELP! The original lantern battery is supposed to be made up of 4 x "F" size cells, which are the capacity of 2 x D cells or 4 x "C" cells each, in the sense of chemicals provided and operating well within the ratings. However there are quite a variety of lantern batteries available in the same package, with corresponding price differences. Some have 4 x C cells, so 1/4 the "original" capacity. Some have 2 x 4 x C, some have 4 x D. At first you may think they are distinguishable by weight, but some have added dead weight in them too (lumps of iron I have seen). Additionally some use alkaline, some carbon zinc types. I am not aware of any with alkaline "F" cells. This makes for a variation from 4 to 14Ah nominally. If there were alkaline "F" cells that would be 28Ah. EverReady and Duracell are definitely involved in some of these misleading practices, I have seen them in both, but I just don't know about Rayovac, it is not marketed here. The only ways to be sure are to cut one open, or measure its capacity at your working load. Unfortunately these are both destructive methods, unless you have access to an Xray machine? You could get some idea by short circuit current of a fresh battery. It should be about 20A briefly for D cell equivalent. A good project would be to define a method that measured the cell internal resistance perhaps.
It seems that one of the purposes of non rechargeable battery manufacturers is to try to create mystery by muddying the water about their products so they can have gold, goldier and goldiest versions, with no specification other than the advertising spiel. To this end most people now believe non-rechargeable cells cannot be well specified in Amp hours, but of course they can be, like any other cell, with appropriate operating conditions specified. This does not necessarily reflect what you get under your particular operating conditions, but you pay for the chemicals, and what you get is directly reflected in the capacity, so it is a good indicator of value for money.

What I really need to know is, what is the best way to do this, wasting as little energy from the lantern battery as possible, and preserving the lifespan of the pointers as much as possible. Ideally they would be operating a little below their normal output. I would calculate a series resistor required to drop 1.5v @ 20mA - i.e. 75 Ohms. This is a non -standard value so you could use 47 Ohms + 28 Ohms in series
Wire one 75 Ohm resistor combination in series with each laser, then run the two resistor/laser circuits in parallel from the 6v battery.
