What is the best woofer match to a 4OHM 500 watt RMS amplifier? I have a 500 Watt RMS (4ohm bridged) stereo amplifier that I need to hook up to a woofer. Problem is I can't figure out which woofer to go for. Would a 600 watt sub be too much for the amp ? Also -> If I get this Kenwood 2ohm 600 watt DVC, will it be 4ohms in bridged ? ok if you get a 600 watt rms sub at 4 ohms it just means it'll be under powered which is fine, it'll still get loud! and yes you can wire a 2ohm dvc sub to 4ohms

Is a 50 amp transfer switch a good match for a 17,500-watt generator? I'm looking to buy the Guardian Ultrasource 17,500 watt generator as a back-up generator for my home. It comes with either a 50 or 60 amp transfer switch (see below). My electrician said that a 50 amp switch is not powerful enough to transfer all 17,500 watts from the generator to the house. He said I would need something closer to 100 amps, and that it would cost about $400 or so. I don't know much about electricity, but I figure that the manufacturer of a 17,500 watt generator probably wouldn't include a 50 or 60 amp switch, unless their engineers had determined they were a good match for each other. My electrician, or the folks at Guardian generators? Lots of information here, and most of it I agree with. While 17500 watts will require a current of 73 amps at 240 volts, this is in excess of the maximum rating of the highest rated generator outlet which is 50 amps. If you are using this outlet, a 60 amp transfer panel will be adequate for your use.
Ask your electrician about the generator neutral connection and whether the transfer panel switches neutral. In many cases, even from the same manufacturer, the two are not supplied in a compatible configuration and should be modified.

What is the consumption of 500 watts "UPS (Urgent Power upply)"? Watts means nothing when it comes to these units.
Look for the VA rating and get a larger rating on that spec as this is how long it will supply power from the battery.

They also may go to VA/Hr which is the Vost-Ampere per hour.
These UPSs are mostly for powering small units like modems and wireless routers. they can be used with a computer but wont last long. They give you enough time there to save and safely shut the power down before the battery drains.

A 5000 watt Coleman generator will work fine for what you are hoping to operate.
A transfer switch is not a difficult item to install, but should be done by someone knowledgeable and qualified. I have a 12 circuit switch manufactured by Siemens installed at my house. Given the choice again I'd put in a Federal Pioneer Stab-lok 20 circuit panel to allow proper balancing of loads and a little more flexibility. Both are available at Home Depot. How do I get started to set up a 500 watt a day or so PV solar system? I want to start looking into using solar panels at my home. For a small scale test to get started and learn more about it I wanted to set up a system of about 500 watts a day to run a lamp or two and maybe a radio or a cell phone charger. What would be the best way to go about this and what do i need to watch out for when selecting equipment? First thing:  you need to correct your units.  A watt is a rate, like a mile per hour.  What you want is watt-HOURS, which a quantity like distance (miles).  You can get 500 watts out of something the size of a flashlight battery, but you'll only get it for minutes at the most.
Getting units right is important; if you use units wrong, you can get answers that are completely misleading and waste a lot of money on something that won't work.
If you want 500 watt-hours per day (say, 100 watts of loads running for 5 hours/day) you'll need at least 100 watts of PV panel (after correcting for the losses due to the angle of sunlight!).  The average sun on a sunny day is equal to about 6 hours of the sunlight at noon, so 100 watts of panel will give you up to 600 watt-hours of juice per day, or maybe 500 Wh after losses.
It's unlikely that your sun situation is going to be that good all the time (unless you live someplace like Phoenix!) so you'll need more PV.  If you have 150 watts, you can go on 4 hours of noontime sun; 200 watts lets you get away with 3 hours.
Next is batteries.  You don't want to discharge your batteries more than about 50%, so to coast for 1 day of no sun you need 1 kWh (83 amp-hours @ 12 volts) of battery.  Coasting for 2 days would be a good thing, so maybe 170 amp-hours of 12-volt deep-discharge battery would serve.  You can get suitable batteries for a starter system in lots of places.
The next thing is the charge controller and inverter (if any).  If you use 12-volt lamps, radio etc. you can dispense with the inverter and its losses.  You can also take all your gear camping with you!  The charge controller will help manage the batteries and prevent damage from overcharging.  Having an undervoltage cutoff or alarm would be good to prevent over-discharging.

The cone of the speaker and the mechanical parts that make it move may break under the stress. Surprisingly, too little power can also damage your subwoofer — in fact, it's actually more common than damage caused by overpowering.
When the volume is turned up and the amp doesn't have enough power, the signal becomes distorted, or "clipped." This distorted signal can cause parts of the speaker to overheat, warp and melt. Not good!
You don't have to match speaker and amp wattages exactly. An amp with a higher output than the speaker's rating won't necessarily damage the speaker — just turn the amp down a bit if you hear distortion from the sub and don't run the speaker at extremely loud volumes for lengthy periods. Likewise, you'll be OK with a lower powered amp if you keep the volume down and don't feed a distorted signal to the sub

Clipping occurs when an amplifier is asked to deliver more current to a speaker than the amp is capable of doing. When an amplifier clips, it literally cuts off the tops and bottoms of the musical waveforms that it's trying to reproduce, thus the term. This introduces a huge amount of distortion into the output signal. Clipping can be heard as a crunching sound on musical peaks.

is 500 watt pretty powerful for a home theater? i have a amp 500 watt and what do those 500 watt mean example: does it mean i can add up too 500 watt power or I assume you are talking about a 5.1 receiver? You mean 100 watts x 5 channels? If so, these systems can never produce the power they claim. They can only produce the rated 100 watts single channel driven. The total system power is typically well under 50% of the rating. So, if you have a 100 x 5 "500 watt" receiver it's more likely closer to 200 watts at best.
For a small room this can be ok but will not be capable of reference levels unless the speakers are very efficient. Generally, most of the time very little power is actually used. At fairly high volume levels on average you may not be using more than 10 or 20 watts. It's the dynamic peaks that require a lot of power and the more you have available the better. A receiver like this doesn't offer much head room for those dynamic peaks. It's certainly not what you would want for a large scale dedicated room. For that you shouldn't use a receiver anyway, you should use a separate preamp/processor and separate power amplifiers. This way you can choose amplifiers of the appropriate size for each speaker. The amplifier power supplies are not shared so each is capable of it's full power. For a large system, it's just a much better way to go. For your living room with reasonably efficient speakers you can do fine with your 200 watt ("500 watt" claimed) receiver. You won't be blowing down the walls with volume but it can be enough to make for an exciting experience to watch an action movie assuming you have good quality efficient speakers and a powered subwoofer.

How can I hook my laptop up to 500 watt speakers??? If possible.? Is it possible to do this? If so what would I need to buy? Is there a cord or something? You need to get a home stereo receiver. The connections on the back of the receiver that you will need to use are rca cable type connections, so you need a rec cable to 3.5 mil to connect to the laptop. The connect the speakers to the receiver, your done. I have this on my desk top.
