You can get a pair of kicker comp VR's at sonicelectronix.com for $170 shipped. They're rated for 400w rms each but will have no problem w/500. Not the best subs out there, but they're good, and for $65 each they're a bargain.

How Much Power Do I Need To Run An 18" 500 Watt RMS Subwoofer? I have an Eminence 18" Subwoofer with an RMS rating of 500 Watts. I've used with a 2000 Watt amp only which is more than enough power but what would be appropriate?
I Am Not Not Talking About Car Audio This Is Concert/PA Systems.
Obviously, you need an amp that can deliver a minimum of 500 watts RMS, but you MUST go above minimum. A 2000 watt amp is a good size, but good quality is much more important than just wattage numbers as many manufacturers use marked ratings that are way beyond theiractual perfomance ability.
Having constant clean and reliable power is much more important than wattage numbers.
That said, you need the extra numbers in the amp as headroom for the speaker to draw against, since use in a large place means a lot of volume, and the speaker can actually draw more than its rated power at times of full extension. Those are the moments when you need that headroom, because without it you get clips in the power, and you not only hear the clipping, it can easily damage your speaker.

there's no way to offer an accurate answer to this question w/o knowing specifically what sub and amp you're talking about. Many companies are very elusive when it comes to accurate power ratings. Some amps advertised as 1000w are only capable of a couple hundred. Same goes for subs.
If the amp IS actually 1000w you CAN run a legitimate 500w sub with it, but you would have to be very careful setting up the amp keeping the gain set very low, the bass boost off, and the low-pass and subsonic (if available) filters set accurately.

when it comes to how loud speakers play, the amount of watts you give them isn't the only factor.
a couple of subwoofers running on 300 watts total, can be louder than 1 subwoofer running on 500 watts total.
it depends on the sensitivity of the subwoofers in question, the size of the subwoofers, how much excursion the woofers can handle, and the type of box the woofer is in.
that one woofer CAN be louder. but whether or not it will be louder will depend on how well you match it up with a good amp and box.
