How can I make a battery charge level indicator for 2 separate 4.5v battery packs? Just making this for a simple model I am working on, so I'm looking for a means to build a suitable energy-efficient battery charge level indicator for a battery pack with 3x AA batteries, preferably NiCd or similar secondary cell battery.
The simplest I want it to be is to have 3 colour coded LEDs - red, yellow/orange and green - to show how much charge the battery has. As the battery pack totals 4.5V each, regular battery indicators for single batteries will not work. I want one battery charge level indicator circuit to be permanently connected to each battery pack, then a simple switch to turn the charge indicator on or off.
The reason I need this is because I plan to leave the secondary cell batteries in the model indefinitely while either being used by a load, being charged by a solar panel circuit or neither. In other words, this model will be self-sufficient and will rely on solar power stored in the batteries.
Oh, and if possible I may need another LED to indicate possible overcharge, although I think it might be hard to even achieve that with a trickle charger circuit. So the LEDs I truly require are: RED for low power, YELLOW or ORANGE for medium power, and GREEN for high/full power. The fourth LED I might need may be another RED, or preferably flashing RED LED, but that is optional.
If anyone can please help me that would be greatly appreciated, as I have failed over and over on attempting to make this work out properly. Thanks in advance!

The rectangular 4.5V battery with blade terminals on the top is commonly used in primary school science experiments on electricity, but I have never encountered any equipment that uses them. Is there any equipment around that uses these batteries? If so, then what? I had a set of bike lights which used that type of battery. It was a few years ago though!

So the question comes down to "How many seconds will 4.7 kJ of energy last if you are converting it at a rate of 0.9 J/s ?"
Time = 4700 / 0.9 = 5222 s (1.45 hours)

AA batteries can get 6V or 4.5V but I need 5V. How can I do this?
you can't, easily, as cell voltages are 2 volts for lead acid, and 1.5 volts for alkaline.
Some rechargeables have a voltage of 1.2 volts per cell, so you can get 4.8 volts from those.
But battery voltages vary a lot from new to almost discharged. ICs that need 5 volts will work between 4.75 and 5.25 volts.
If you need a fairly accurate 5 volts, you need a 7805 voltage regulator. Download the data sheet and study it.

Convert 4 x 1.5v battery to output 15v? I have made a LED torch power by 10 x 1.5v AA Baterries which has 15v ouput. The size is to big and bulky. With 1/3 the required voltage, do not expect it to glow much... if at all.
If you use 3 batteries in serie, however, you would get the needed 4.5V.
