What resistor do I use for this LED application? I would like to know what type of resistor I should use to safely run .23A of LED's that take 3.5 volts off of a 12v 115 AH car battery. I would like it to be as bright as possible, so would a 50 ohm or 80 ohm resistor work? 39 ohms rated at 5 watts to avoid burning hot.

Electrical/wiring setup, would I be doing this correctly? These aren't so much schematics as they are wiring diagrams. These are probably going to seem to be very elementary questions, but my paranoia for screwing up is getting the better of me, so I would rather ask someone who might know. I am putting together a lighted glove as part of a costume. It will consist of 5 LEDs wired to a SPDT switch that goes to a 12v battery hidden inside of a pipe (for cosmetic reasons). I originally was going to go with a 9v source, but its odd shape wouldn't be ideal for the visual aspect in the end (and the fact it may die quickly of power loss), so I was going to go with a 12v (Energizer 23A). Let's assume the LEDs I have chosen have the following: 3.6v forward (4.0 max) 20 mA forward Now, I have three setups here as far as I can tell: -SETUP A- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/leadfoot180/setupA.gif Total power dissipated: 495.2 mW Total current drawn from source: 40 mA -SETUP B- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/leadfoot180/setup_B.gif Total power dissipated: 764 mW Total current drawn from source: 60 mA -SETUP C- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/leadfoot180/setupC.gif Total power dissipated: 1300 mW Total current drawn from source: 100 mA Now, my question is, and they're probably stupid questions, is the power dissipated, that means that setup C would emit the highest illumination due to its distribution of power for 1 LED for 1 resistor, correct? Second question is, what setup would be the most ideal? Could my 12v source power these without any issues? I'll take one example. Setup C
I come up with slightly different numbers, and yes, the higher the wattage the brighter the LEDs, however, I think you forgot something. Back to the drawing board.
At 3.6v and 20ma, I calculate the resistance of the LED to be 180 ohms. With a 12 v supply your resistor should be 420 ohms for 3.6 volts on the LEDs.
180 + 420 = 600 and at 12v = 20ma
Total for all 5 legs would be
100ma and 1200mw
but if you're looking for which is brighter, you can only count the power dissipated by the LEDs, not the total power used.
With 20ma Through each of 5 LEDs, 5 * 20 * 3.6 = 360mw total.
The other 840mw will dissipate in the resistors and be in the form of heat, not light.
For the most efficient use of your power, you want a smaller supply voltage, so that you can use smaller resisters.
Three AA's for example would give you 4.5 volts. A 45 ohm resistor in series would give you your 3.6 volts on the LEDs and 20 ma in each of the 5 legs.
The light output would still be 360mw, but only 90mw in heating the resistors.

can i connect anything of 12V to a car battery? my question is that i have plenty of things eg computer fans,...etc that runs with 12 Volts and various Amps.. 0.23A, 250mA ,...etc can i connect anything of 12v to my car battery Regardless of the amperes?or what should i do if i want to connect various 12v things do i need to limit/control amps in any way or i can just connect anything that says 12V to my car battery? You can pretty much hook and 12V up to it, but if I were you Id put a fuse between the battery and the device, since if there is a short that battery will produce about 500 amps, which will set something rated for 250 MA on fire.

Powering a device from batteries? I want to power a device which requires a 12V 1A DC power supply. If I have a 12V 23A battery which I soldered up with the correct jack plug for the device would I break it? Do I need to put a resistor in place first? The device I'm wanting to run is a wireless access point - I want to leave it outside to repeat to another location. Ideally I'd also like to hook the battery up so its recharged by a solar panel (giving me access on a more permanent basis). I found a solar-powered 12V 2.4W battery trickle charger at a big electronics website for not a lot of money. I'm thinking of: Positive: Solar charger -> 12V lead acid battery -> 1.5amp fuse -> access point Negative: access point -> battery -> solar charger I can increase the battery capacity to give me more working time. I think that'll work, but if an electronics whiz can give me a firm yes/no I'll feel happier :-) A fully charged 12 volt battery that can deliver 23 amps sounds like a lead acid battery. When 'fully charged' for 'peak usage' it will be something like 13.8 volts. When 'fully charged' for cyclic use it will be more like 14.3 volts. (Possibly high enough to kill the AP if connected directly!) The power supply for the access point will probably have the smoothing capacitor in the access point, so the output from the power supply is probably unsmoothed dc and not 12 volts regulated.
In other words the output from the 12 volt battery isn't 12 volts and the output from the 12 volt power supply probably isn't 12 volts.
The power supply for the access point provides up to 12V at 1A, which is a fair amount, if the AP uses the full 12 watts. Adding a 4.2 watt solar cell wouldn't extend it much further, in terms of hours. If you don't mind spending the money you could use a larger solar cell to put back the energy used in a full day. (a bit larger than 50 watts would seem reasonable, if the sun shines for 8 hours a day) That way the battery would stay topped up. You would probably find that it would run flat a few times a year. (A 50 watt solar cell is probably pretty expensive...)
As your battery is a 23 ampere hour battery, it would nominally provide 1 A for 23 hours. The battery rating seems reasonable, but the solar cell seems way too small. Added to that the fully charged battery voltage may be too high for the AP.
I would:
1. Measure how much current the AP really draws. This will give you a much better idea how big a solar cell you will need.
2. Measure the peak output voltage from the power supply - you would need an oscilloscope to do it properly.
3. Charge the battery from the mains, then let it trickle charge from the solar cell. Measure the charged battery voltage.
4. If 3 is less than 2 then you can power the AP direct from the battery. If not then you would need to 'lose some volts', whcih you could do either using a regulator, a resistor as you suggested, or some diodes to drop multiples of 0.6v.
Alternatively, power it using 12 volts over a long wire, via the power supply plugged into the mains, with all of the mains bits safely indoors.

can i use a 27a or a 23a 12v battery instad of a 12v car Battery to power my leds? I do traffic control for my job and i would like to put some leds around the traffic cones for night work. The 5050 leds i have say to run them off 12v that's fine if i use them off the truck but i want to make some round ones up to put around the cones with there own power can i use 12v 23a and not a 12v car battery to power them. yes since you will be using 12v supply.
but may need frequent or manually recharging of the battery you will use.
unlike if source will come from your truck, running the engine will recharge your battery.

keyless entry doesn't work anymore whats wrong? The red light does come on but the doors don't open. When i use the key the alarm goes off and engine won't turn. I have a second remote which looks nothing like the first so I think its not even for this same vehicle. Is it the battery or something worse? also where to get this battery it says 27a 12v and autozone only sells 23a (different?) or same Its an 07 Hummer who said 66 VW? Weirdo. I didn't know 1966 Volkswagen's had key-less remotes.

What are 12V 23A batteries and why are they used ? I just bought a wireless doorbell and although it uses standard AA for the bell, the buttons use 12 V 23A. They are included, but still, a year or so from now, I will have to find some of them. Why would such be used as opposed to something more usual ? This is the doorbell I bought. 12 volt 23A batteries are common in the US. I got some at Walmart; they were stocked in the camera and automotive service areas. They are used in key fobs, garage door openers, security systems, keyless entry systems. For some reason they were cheaper in the auto service area.

Most other batteries are only 1.5 volts and are longer. You can design a cheaper, smaller remote with longer range with the 23A batteries. Since they only use power while you are pressing the button, battery life shouldn't be a problem.
My experience is that the original batteries from China tend to be the "heavy duty" type that have a shorter life and are prone to leakage. I suggest buying a brand name "alkaline" type which is what is commonly sold in the US.

What is the battery that fits in the GD-N1R remote control transmitter for a nikon digital camera? all i can find out using google is it is a 12v 23a battery. Trouble is i am having problems finding one of the correct size It's a pretty standard remote control battery...try a car accessory shop.

are there chargers for 12v batteries? im using the small 12v batteries, 23a alkaline batteries, to light led lights but the lights take the charge so quickly the batteries don't last long. are there suggestions to what i can use instead or how to recharge the batteries?

Where can I get a battery holder for a mini 12v battery? I am making an electronic gadget that is powered by one of those small MN21/23A type 12v batteries. Battery approx size is 1 1/8" (28.5mm) x 2/5" (10.3mm) Can anyone tell me where I can get a small battery holder for this exact size of battery? I have looked at Farnell, Maplin and one or two others but can't seem to find anything specifically for this battery.
