That depends on how much current the cluster uses.
I have one of those cheap little flashlights (a freebie from Harbor Freight) that has 9 little leds & 3 AAA batteries.
It takes about 180 ma using fresh batteries.
So if I wanted to use it with a 12 volt supply I would need to put about 42 ohms in series. 47 ohms is a standard value so I'd probably use that. The power dissipation would be about 1.4 watts, so I'd need at least a resistor with at least a 2 watt rating. Two 22 ohm - 1 watt (minimum) resistors in series would also work
12 volts - 4.5 volts = 7.5 volts drop needed
Since V=IR, 7.5 volts = (0.18 amps)(R)
R= 41.6 ohms
P (in watts) = VI = (7.5 volts)(0.18 amps) = 1.35 watts

Building a Solar Light? I want to get some solar panels and hook them up to a 12v deep cycle battery. Then off of that run some 12v lighting. I also want to build a second one for inside to charge flashlights and some electronics. Where would I go to pickup some solar panels that would charge a 12v deep cycle battery? Is it safe for a 12V Halogen bulb? I'm looking to modify my flashlight to use a halogen bulb. How many volts should I apply if the bulb was rated at12V 20W? Should it be 15 volts or just 12 volts? Would 9.6 volts be efficient? I meant to say - Would 9.6 volts be 'sufficient', not 'efficient'. P = I x E
I = P / E 20W / 12V = 1.7 A
Be sure your batteries can deliver that much current for a reasonable amount of time.
Also, light output of an incandescent bulb is quite dependent on the voltage across the bulb. 9.6V is not good if it is the starting point for further voltage decrease as the battery is exhausted.

I need a 6 volt halogen flashlight bulb. Can you help find one? I need a halogen flashligh bulb that is an actual 5.9 or 6 volt bulb at the very least. What I want is a "halogen" for 5 or, better yet 6 cell flashlights not the 5.2 volt ones for 4 cell 6v lanters. Some one plese find me a link. p.s. Xenon, Krypton, LED, and other various bulbs. Which is considered the brightest type of bulb? Assuming all types of bulbs are running on a flashlight and they are running off 12 volts, which type of bulb would be considered to be the brightest type of bulb and would have the best quality of lighting. While at the same time it would give off the best beam and would be able to light up an area both close by and from a good distance. Xenon compact arc lamps are filled with several atmospheres of xenon gas.
The spectrum is more in the visible range then the spectrum of the classic Tungsten lamps.

Tungsten Lamps consist of a coiled tungsten filament mounted in a quartz glass envelope that has been filled with an inert gas plus a trace of halogen.

where can I find a cord to rechare my 12 volt black and decker flashlight? I lost the cord that plugs it in to recharge Try Wal-Mart they carry all the Black and Decker parts. If not there go to the Electronics Dept and find a universal charger with universal ends on them.

Low amperage charge of a big battery? I have a automobile-jumpstarting unit. (sort of an emergency battery,compressor,flashlight unit thing). Its wall charger has bitten the proverbial dust. I found a wall charger for a digital camera,rated at 12 volts, 800 mA .The polarity matches. I don't know the power rating for the battery inside the jumpstart unit , but i'm guessing it's significantly higher.A couple of Amps probably. Is there any risk of frying the charger if i attempt to use it on the large battery? Lower amps simply means a slower charge.
But some batteries require an AC charger (not DC), so make sure you use the correct type.

You'll need an iron nail and a wire copper coil. You can find a length of copper wire at almost any craft store, and the nail can be found at any Lowe's or Home Depot. Using a hammer, nail the nail into a piece of plywood. Then, wrap the wire around the nail. Now, you should be able to move the board up and down and generate a current.
